As one of the 22% of households without access to a car, with a female partner who (justifiably) feels too #unsafe to #cycle on the road, and in living an area of south #Wales with disconnected and poorly maintained #cyclepaths, this video really hit home. #activetravel #equality

Yet more evidence suggesting that 'sustainable' aviation fuel is precisely the opposite. Reducing the number of flights is the only sustainable option. #SAF #sustainability #deforestation

Productive morning cleaning the beach between #Penarth and Lavernock Point. As always, lots of plastic bottles and drinks cans, with numerous smaller pieces of #plastic and polystyrene, which pose a particular hazard to birds and sea creatures. @keepwalestidy.cymru #beachclean

Potential Perturbation of the Ionosphere by Megaconstellations and Corresponding Artificial Re-entry Plasma Dust 500,000 to 1 million satellites are expected in the next decades, primarily to build internet constellations called megaconstellations. Interesting article. The atmospheric impacts of planned (and unplanned) 'disposal' of orbital debris is also cause for concern. arxiv.org/abs/2312.09329

I agree. Lavernock nature reserve is similar. Sadly, I think it's the case in a lot of sensitive wildlife sites across the UK. I've seen multiple off-lead dogs in areas important for birds (and livestock) over the last months in both Norfolk and North Wales.

No sign of the hoopoe at Cosmeston during a quick lunchtime circuit. Instead: lots of dogs, dog poo bags in bushes, and dog poo. 💩

Offspring of deadly intergalactic robot standing in front of a stone wall. Small laser arms have started to develop from the body. Rudimentary eyes are struggling to open in the bright spring sunshine. The paper-thin blue collar of the original chrysalis is still visible below the head. Some have said that this is just a discarded toilet cistern, but what do they know.

... and not forgetting the use of rendered animal fats. In a scenario where there is insufficient plant matter to meet demand, fostering a reliance on animal-based feedstocks could add significant friction to efforts to reduce meat consumption in the name of emissions reduction.

A small group of us took part in the #GBSpringClean along the railway path in #Penarth this morning. Between us we filled more than 4 large bags with #litter in a 500m stretch!! #Lovewhereyoulive @keepwalestidy.cymru

Reaching net zero by 2050 ‘cheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisis’ Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits

Contary to claims from populist politicians and right-wing thinktanks "reaching #netzero would cost about £4bn a year... which (is) roughly equivalent to the energy-related costs of the #fossilfuel shocks that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine." www.theguardian.com/environment/... #climatechange

Stunning morning for a cycle round the Great Orme! Huge, noisy, rafts of common guillemots near the lighthouse (c.1000 birds), with 6 black guillemots amongst them. Also fulmar, shag, cormorant, herring gull, raven, and rock pipit. Significantly more meadow pipits than yesterday. #birdingwales

A return visit today to take photos from a different angle has confirmed without doubt that this is the lost Great Orme #menhir. Compare my photo (LH) with the 1951 image (RH) on #Coflein for site NPRN420360. coflein.gov.uk/en/sites/420... #GreatOrme @stoneclub.bsky.social @megalithic.bsky.social

It's where I've drawn a red circle [grid ref SH 75797 84084]. The blue circle is the grid reference from Coflein [SH 76000 84000], which notes that the 'exact location is unknown'.

I may have found a long lost #menhir during a trip up the Great Orme earlier. This stone at 53°20'20.6"N 3°52'00.6"W seems to fit the description of #Coflein NPRN 420360 coflein.gov.uk/en/sites/420... @megalithic.bsky.social @stoneclub.bsky.social #standingstonesunday

No luck finding the lesser yellowlegs near Rhuddlan, but close-up views of 2 water pipit were a decent consolation for the cycle along the coast. Also present: black-tailed godwit (1), curlew, lapwing, goosander, wigeon, Canada geese, teal, turnstone and many, many piping redshanks. #birdingwales

With months of continuous rain in the UK made more likely by climate change-induced jetstream anomalies it's worth reminding ourselves of the impact on food supplies and our wallets. "Between 2020-2024, harvests were below the twenty-year average in four out of five years" #climatechange

Finally caught up with the black redstart on Cardiff Bay barrage and enjoyed the spectacle of a large flock of cormorants (c.50) hunting fish in the middle of the Bay. Also Chiffchaff at the end of the Tiger Yard promontory. #BirdingWales

Hi there, I'm hoping to combine the baikal teal and pallid harrier on a train/bike adventure v soon. I'm struggling to pin down the best place to look for the teal though. Is the lane at 51.700922,-4.047737 a good starting point?

Flock of dark-bellied brent geese with a possible interloper in the top line, second from left. The unusual bird has a thicker-set white head. It also has obvious white flashes on the wings and a suggestion of a lighter upper forward wing.

Noting report of a possible blue-morph snow goose at #Cley (via cleybirdclub.org.uk/list-sightin... ), I saw the bird at Cley and had coincidentally photo'd it with my phone when it flew over the marsh nr Blakeney (2nd from left, top row). I'm no expert, but thought worth sharing if it helps id.
