If you sold tickets to a series of debates on the economy between Mark Carney and Andrew Scheer I’m pretty sure you could make a sizeable dent in the federal deficit. #cdnpoli

Stephen Maher: Pierre Poilievre is finally acting like a grown-up. Mark Carney would be wrong to discount him The “security” of having what Poilievre has called the “worst damn job in the country” has given him time to reconsider his approach

Liberals should be wary of a grown-up Poilievre

You can’t put your name on it if AI wrote it. It is lying, and that goes against the point of writing, which is about seeking truth.

Thank you! I think there might be a book in it. The icy fear of the sea, the icy rum ashore etc etc.

I wonder sometimes if I should write a book about my journeys, so I thought I would start with a magazine article.

Beating the thorny path: A modern pilgrimage to luperon Luperon, in the Dominican Republic, is indisputably one of the Caribbean’s best hurricane holes. Stephen Maher reports on its unique appeal – and meets legendary cruising writer Bruce Van Sant

For years I have been dividing my time between Canada and a sailboat in the south seas, having adventures and doing boat maintenance. I decided this year to finally write something about it.

I'm grateful to editors at the Star, to Konnor and to our charming translator, @JonathanLaMare, who speaks good Creole for an American, and to the people who told us their stories. 11/11

While you are drinking pina coladas on the beach, it would be nice to know that your country is helping in some small way. 9/x

Every winter there is a mass exodus of Canadians to the DR, Cuba, Jamaica, Costa Rica etc. That is mostly good for those countries. But I think the government of Canada should be trying to help the poorest people in those countries, so that Canadians are not just customers. 8/x

I believe Canada can and should try to help these desperate people. We are spending huge amounts of money at resorts here. I think our government should be doing something to help the san papeye, show the flag, do something. 7/x

Last year about a million Canadians came to vacation in the DR, which is great for the country’s US$20.5-billion tourism industry, and great for sun-starved Canadians. But so far as I can tell Canada is doing next to nothing to help the desperate san papeye. 6/x

Violin Celestine holds her fourth child, Dave. She gave birth in the woods while travelling to the DR. I told her I thought she was tough. She shrugged and said "I am as God made me." 5/x

Alena Pierre, 23, gave birth to her daughter, Angel, on the floor next to her bed rather than risk deportation. She was born in the DR but has no papers. She is terrified of being sent to Haiti, where she has never been. 4/x

Last year, Dominican President Luis Abinader announced “painful but necessary” measures to clear out the migrants, placing Immigration officials at the hospitals, which means the san papye can't get medical treatment. 3/x

I convinced the
@TorontoStar
to take a story on the very difficult lives of "les san papye" — whose lives are so hard. Photographer
@KonnorKilloran
and I visited the "bateys" where they live in constant fear of deportation, working for very little money, isolated, without medical care. 2/x

I've been spending time on the beautiful north coast of the Dominican Republic for the past three winters, enjoying the sun, the beaches and, especially, the friendly, easy going people, but I am troubled by the way the Haitian migrants there are treated. 1/x

Stephen Maher: Hear those rumours of an election call? Here’s what’s really happening Pierre Poilievre’s best chance of one day winning Carney’s job is to wait out the crisis, at which point his focus on affordability issues and tax cuts might look appealing.
