We went from making up reasons like "weapons of mass destruction" to you know what, fuck it we don't need to even lie, the president "had a feeling" that they pose a threat so we just bomb them so we can. A country doing this can't expect peace inside.

we need to talk about that Ring Super Bowl ad
If you want to learn about the viciously racist history of Border Patrol, I recommend Kelly Lytle Hernandez's "Migra!" It's really fascinating because Hernandez looks at the class and race implications of border patrol and who joined.

time to re-up this again i guess
A family member reacts after a federal immigration officer used a battering ram to break down a door before making an arrest on January 11, 2026, in Minneapolis.
Stunning photos from Minneapolis, including this one by John Locher for the Associated Press. www.theatlantic.com/photography/...
There are so many horrifying and touching photos, but this one (Stephen Maturen / Getty) feels like it tells an entire trilogy worth of stories. I hope this one and the lady with the broiler pan chest armor end up in museums.

A comparison table with two columns contrasting "Antisocial Tech" (left, in light blue) and "Prosocial Tech" (right, in light orange/yellow). The table has 5 rows comparing different aspects: Monetization: Antisocial tech operates as data brokers and advertising platforms, while prosocial tech operates as public services designed for the common good. Metrics: Antisocial tech uses indicators such as daily active users, clicks, and time on platform, while prosocial tech uses indicators such as user-reported satisfaction and intergroup communication. Data: Antisocial tech involves minimum privacy and maximizing data collection, while prosocial tech maximizes privacy, minimizes data collection, and employs Privacy by Design. Recommendation Systems: Antisocial tech amplifies highly emotional content, incentivizing outrage and divisive content, while prosocial tech amplifies trusted sources and incentivizes areas of agreement between groups. UX Design: Antisocial tech reduces human agency with manipulative design tricks to maximize user engagement and unintentionally undermines social cohesion, while prosocial tech maximizes human agency and control over user experience and is designed to enhance social cohesion.
What is “prosocial” tech besides the opposite of antisocial?
This blueprint lays it out pretty clearly: where antisocial tech often damages our social fabric and communities, prosocial tech aims to actively build up healthy digital ecosystems.

Representatives from Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service have fed sensitive data from across the Education Department into artificial intelligence software to probe the agency’s programs and spending, according to two people with knowledge of the DOGE team’s actions.

Most of the people reading this have a sense of how bad things are right now.
So for encouragement, here's a thread with examples of folks fighting back.
All applications for gender marker change are on hold while the State Department changes this policy.
Anyone who now submits an application for a change runs the risk of losing access to their passport and documents while their application is being processed.
1/ 🧵 I’ve been getting a lot of worried questions about the deluge of executive orders targeting trans people. I wanted to share my thoughts publicly, because I know this moment feels heavy. That's by design.

A technical deep-dive, since people have been asking me for my thoughts. I'll expand a bit on some of the key points here in a thread. 🧵
Time to go to bat again, folks. They're trying to ram the bill through that would allow the Dep't of Treasury to arbitrarily label a nonprofit a terrorist organization and strip it of its 501(c) status.
Can't emphasize enough that no evidence is required to do so.

For every like I will post 1 UX fact
(I'm not doing a meme image for this, UX fact #0 is that content is more important than visuals)
A common thought by devs is "couldn't you make a social network using RSS" and we basically went... yeah let's try that premise with some tweaks
