As fun as it is to laugh at current pope beef, it's a stretch to suggest the role has always been unquestionable within the catholic church and people ought to be careful about what historical narratives they give voice to.

The catholic church today isn't identical to how it was in 1095 not out of personal preference but because of nearly a thousand years of social change. It isn't an uncomplicated good, there's plenty of horrible things they've done in living memory that we can and must hold them accountable for.

-but the contradiction of an ostensibly pacifist & egalitarian faith being stewarded by a military aristocratic elite is one of the driving factors of religious unrest in the modern period! We've done this one already!
