What do you do when you're on a planetary expedition and you discover your whole crew dead, the ship-board AI start acting cagey about someone else on board, and THEN you start having dreams that feel like someone else's memories?

Am I the only one that thinks the implied Battle for Hadley's Hope that we don't see, but the Colonial Marines find the aftermath of in Aliens, would be an amazing DLC for the Alien: Isolation sequel?

Working hard to stay distracted tonight. Gas Giant Gambit is a finalist for the Laramie Awards, and the winners are being announced tonight!
But the ceremony in in Washington state, and I'm in Toronto.
Gonna be a late night mashing that refresh button.

Happy Friday, all! Check out my books pls ๐ซถ
AND the winner of the Laramie Awards will be announced tomorrow night, sometime after 8:15!
I'm still blown away that Gas Giant Gambit, an unapologetic space-western, is a finalist for an award ostensibly meant for historical or contemporary westerns.
Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I've been building a new computer from scratch (photos to come later), and every day it seems like there's one more piece I need. But, the final cable should come this afternoon. And you know I can't wait to play with my new toy.

The week has, unfortunately, been a write-off for me when it comes to writing. I've got too much to be excited about to focus.

Assuming nothing goes amiss, BoMB should be released tonight (ET).
Fingers crossed (for time & tech).

Horror, scifi, fantasy, and weird fiction.
If it's strange, dark, or just off the beaten path of "reality," we want to read it.

I lost yesterday's writing to time to (planned) vehicle maintenance before Jessie drove up to see her mother and grandmother today (7-ish hours away).
I am currently losing today's writing time because she left at a different time than I was expecting and it threw my rhythm off.
Gotta get to it!
Although the sinking of RMS Lusitania happened years before Shallow Trenches/Open Skies takes place, it looms large over the main character, 2nd Lt. Bernard "Griz" Behr.

We *knew* it!
When a young woman is unwillingly dragged into a roadside psychic's shop, she learns an ancient secret from her family's past that changes the way she sees the world forever.

The last time we went to the moon, it sparked the golden age of #sciencefiction. Returning now has me feeling thing and thinking thoughts.
If you're new to scifi, or haven't given it a try yet, now might be an ideal time to dip your toe in those galactic waters.

A prodigal son returns home to learn his old money comes with some old and very dark secrets, in Marsden Lyonwahl's Southern Gothic yarn "Me, Myself, and I."

First draft of my superhero-adjacent romance "Crรจme Brรปlรฉe," for the 2nd round of the @nycmidnight.bsky.social #shortstorychallenge2026, is finished.
Editing tomorrow, but this ended up becoming a fun origin story for a pair of baddies for my Cobalt Fist superhero, and I had a blast writing it!
I think I've actually stumbled onto a pretty fun little romance story here.
Using some of my pre-existing characters and settings worked well for Round 1. Maybe it will again for Round 2--this time with my 1930s era superhero, and a brand new villain!
#shortstorychallenge2026
Okay.
Three days to write a 1750 word romance.
Again.
As I have said in the past, romance is far from my wheelhouse. But I *think* I have an idea that might make this more palatable for myself, and may make for a pretty fun story, too.

Submissions for our Summer '26 isssue are open until the end of May! Check our Submissions page for genres and guidelines! We don't ask that you stick to a theme, but matching the season of the issue is encouraged!

Ha! Very different from "A Man Walks Into a Bar," I promise!
Romance.
Again.
You gotta be freaking kidding me.
#ShortStoryChallenge2026
Just had an interesting thought about subverting the Groundhog Day time loop trope.
A short story or novella may be brewing. Like I need another project.
I don't often write at night, but I likely won't get another chance to work on Shallow Trenches/Open Skies this week.
So, I've got some sufficiently scifi mood lighting, an action-packed playlist, and a Sunset Sarsaparilla, and I think I'm ready for some night-writing!

Halfway through writing this unplanned and un-outlined scene, I suddenly realized I was unintentionally mirroring a scene from earlier in the manuscript, but with the roles revered, and showing off how both characters have changed for the better.
God, I love those writing moments.
