Asked about JK Rowling’s opposition to trans rights, Dugdale said: “I have a huge respect for JK Rowling. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her before and I think her story and how she came to be this prolific, incredible children’s writer in this city as a single mum writing in a cafe is phenomenal and an inspiration to so many women across the world.

“I think she’s been a really powerful political advocate [for] improving the lot of single mums, making a case for tackling poverty and inequality in all its forms, and there is absolutely a place for her in public life to share her experiences and tell her story and make a difference.”

The problem there is"reform will shit the bed and labour could win by default" is very much not an impossible scenario so they can't write off needing swing voters entirely

The central joke here is at the yimbyist notion of "building anything is good regardless of what it is" and playing on the absurdity of it

I think her argument is its absurd to build a warehouse in a residential area with poor transport links to replace an existing warehouse not far away when that means constant disruption for residents and has really badly impacted drainage in order to create like 2 jobs that already existed

it's cool that the one thing both of them agree on is that transgender people should be denied healthcare. both those ghouls can go to hell

Am I misunderstanding something? I feel like there's the inherent absurd misunderstanding "the council pension funds will invest in my hot tub" which is being played to highlight the central absurdity "a council pension funds is investing in something that makes local people's lives worse"

Every year, whilst at the Hay Festival, I meet people who think they are at the Hay Festival but are actually at this event, which coincidentally is in the same town at the same time.
I often fondly remember Matt Hancock trying to blag his way into a Hay evening event, only to discover this.

It's easy to lose the substantive win here in the Government's transphobic framing. Last summer, we expected the Code to be forced through without scrutiny. Instead, they have had to amend it and recognise they got their legal analysis wrong. It was our community's hard work that achieved this.

It actually is Baal… and this after a dozen Iranian LEGO animations depicting Baal as his ally. This is hard to even process.

They pop up on campus a lot and seem to have young leaders as well as young members. I have not found much that's inherently super annoying from them but I've been expecting bad things

Thanks for the answer and the correction. Yeah they seemed to appear out of nowhere fully formed, which makes sense if they emerged of of an existing organisation. They're not evil that you know if then? Like, evil in the do bad things way, rather than some abstract sense

There’s a wave of attacks on the ruling class People have reached a breaking point. American consumer sentiment is terrible, registering at the lowest level ever recorded this week. Gas prices just jumped more in March than they have in any month...

Warehouses on fire, Molotov thrown at Sam Altman’s house, a data center supporting politician’s home shot at — attacks on the ruling class have begun.

Every attacker will now be deemed a terrorist, that’s inevitable.

But what the ruling class doesn’t want you to know is they made this inevitable.

This isn't on you it's a whole community issue. The woman published a big statement with her name at the bottom and people were discussing it but knowledge of her gender didn't stick because she was just called This Person in the discourse

I think I might start noting down every time a cis politics nerd complains about Eleanora from Stats4Lefties and uses her pronouns rather than saying "this person". I have not heard a solitary "she" from any of them in all the pixels that have been spilled enumerating her flaws

Are the RCP that bad? I've been trying to work that out. And TUSC, as far as I can see they're not the best but hardly the worst in YP (unless I've missed something)

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

The problem Your Party has is that it wanted to be big enough to engulf the left. But it just isn't. If it was TUSC, the SSP and honestly probably the RCP would have folded.

As it is they're basically another step along the way to a broad left Party and don't have the power to define the movement

Honestly, that "guarantee" in the 2014 legal-opinion has always been over-reported and under-enforced, but a lot of Western media does not care to investigate the realities or nuances of what life is like for queer people in the Third World. C'est la vie.

The "I don't recall saying good luck" meme from the Simpsons. First panel has Kirk van Houten sat at a desk across from his boss, with the text "So thats it? 7 years on the wait list and all you give me is a sticker with a suicide hotline on and tell me I'm valid?" Second panel shows the reverse shot of the boss, with the text "I don't remember saying you're valid."

Following a tip of from @sideways.bsky.social on the Laurel's new scheme to "help" trans people to "wait well" for their healthcare, I was inspired.

We have a small elite that is loyal only to itself

The remain movement was a test case in running an ideologically hollow centrist mass movement focused on legal crowd funders

We are a society based on patronage that stopped doing that and trans rights was a proxy for generational conflict

While he hesitates his dogs catch sight of him. First ‘Black-foot’, Melampus, and keen-scented Ichnobates, ‘Tracker’, signal him with baying, Ichnobates out of Crete, Melampus, Sparta. Then others rush at him swift as the wind, ‘Greedy’, Pamphagus, Dorceus, ‘Gazelle’, Oribasos, ‘Mountaineer’, all out of Arcady: powerful ‘Deerslayer’, Nebrophonos, savage Theron, ‘Whirlwind’, and Laelape, ‘Hunter’.

Then swift-footed Pterelas, ‘Wings’, and trail-scenting Agre, ‘Chaser’, fierce Hylaeus, ‘Woody’, lately gored by a boar, the wolf-born Nape, ‘Valley’, Poemenis, the trusty ‘Shepherd’, and Harpyia, ‘Snatcher’, with her two pups. There is thin-flanked Sicyonian Ladon, ‘Catcher’, Dromas, ‘Runner’, ‘Grinder’, Canache, Sticte ‘Spot’, Tigris ‘Tigress’, Alce, ‘Strong’, and white-haired Leucon, ‘Whitey’, and black-haired Asbolus, ‘Soot’.

Lacon, ‘Spartan’, follows them, a dog well known for his strength, and strong-running Aëllo, ‘Storm’. Then Thoos, ‘Swift’, and speedy Lycisce, ‘Wolf’, with her brother Cyprius ‘Cyprian’. Next ‘Grasper’, Harpalos, with a distinguishing mark of white, in the centre of his black forehead, ‘Black’, Melaneus, and Lachne, ‘Shaggy’, with hairy pelt, Labros, ‘Fury’, and Argiodus, ‘White-tooth’, born of a Cretan sire and Spartan dam, keen-voiced Hylactor, ‘Barker’, and others there is no need to name. The pack of them, greedy for the prey follow over cliffs and crags, and inaccessible rocks, where the way is hard or there is no way at all. He runs, over the places where he has often chased, flying, alas, from his own hounds. He longs to shout ‘I am Actaeon! Know your own master!’ but words fail him, the air echoes to the baying.
