..We're visual creatures and seeing successful launches with the requisite pomp and circumstance is part of the bargain in our support. When the world is an unholy wreck and the story arc of the mission gets fractured it's hard to maintain that wonder. That it presented as a one-off didn't help...

Part of the allure of public support for NASA is the sense of shared wonder it inspires. By and large the science aspect of it is lost on most, myself included.
But when I went to Florida as a 12yr old and watched the shuttle launch it was as close to magic as I have experienced...
