It's been so interesting to watch this unfold. Barnes & Noble and other big book chains shut indies down in the the 1990s (and on) and then Amazon came along and ate up all the book market share. Now people tired of big corporations are creating demand for more indies

For the first time in decades, consensus broke at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The United States cast the lone “no” vote on a document aimed at improving justice systems for women and girls worldwide. Misogyny is the official policy of the US under Trump.
this is adorable and it’s extra funny because of the way mamdani correctly leaned into branding himself as “zohran” (it’s a really cool name!)
but now that he’s the mayor that’s his name instead apparently
Photo I took of these wonderful people (the faces of whom I’ve blacked out) singing happy Birthday to their lovely old dog at a bar I was at tonight in Portland
I was at a dog-friendly bar in NW Portland tonight and a table behind me started singing Happy Birthday and then I realized it wasn’t for a person but a really old dog who was wearing a crown and he was old and fucking adorable and I love this city
When I hear my students
refer to the 1990s
as “the late 1900s,”
I sigh and think to myself:
“it doesn’t feel like that
was so long ago.”
And
when I hear my students
refer to 2019
as when the pandemic began
I sigh and think to myself:
“it feels like that
was so long ago.”
Last week, CCNow and @climatecentral.org dropped a webinar explaining everything you need to know about the strong, potentially “super” El Niño long-range weather models are predicting for later this year. Watch the recording:
We're simultaneously a controversy on everyone's lips, that everyone's invited to have an opinion on, while being so few that hospitals cut us loose to maintain funding for everyone else.
We're treated like this new and annoying group, take a number and wait for everyone else to get help first.
I fled Utah after living there for 15 years due to the constant attacks on trans people, even the University of Utah hospital capitulating in advance of expected bans.
Moving took every cent I had and I worry it still won't be enough, not when hospitals keep treating us as expendable.

Barely more than a decade ago, Florida proudly and with a bipartisan vote passed in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants who had been brought here as children and grew up in Florida. DeSantis’ Lieutenant Governor was actually a champion of the bill.
Things changed fast.
bringing back shame and social sanction for being a bigoted asshole is good, actually

NASA astronaut Christina Koch sits in an U.S. Navy MH-60S Seahawk attached to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 23 on the flight deck of the San Antonio Class amphibious transport dock USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) after returning from space on Apr. 10, 2026.
This picture of Astronaut Christina Koch after the Artemis landing is frankly incredible and beautiful.
Record profits are unpaid wages and unpaid taxes.
I think you can, with a completely straight face after reading this story, argue Patel has been Trump’s best cabinet member.
JUST IN: Aliya Rahman, the Minneapolis woman whose violent arrest by ICE agents in January was filmed and went viral, today filed a complaint against DHS over its agents' "brutal tactics and conduct."
A first step for suing the federal govt, which she intends to do. www.huffpost.com/entry/aliya-...
We got people of retirement age working gig economy jobs. That's gotta mean something. You can show me all the charts you like and I'm sure the data is solid but people are struggling in LA. We shop at the cheap food store and it's expensive as hell. Food, gas, and housing are breaking people here
I guess I'm not smart enough to understand what vibecession is supposed to mean, but the fact that blueberries are $9 (at Food 4 Less!) is absolutely something. My wife and I are paid so it's something we can afford but most of the people in my neighborhood aren't fat paid and shop there too

I’d like to see Pete Hegseth eat one of these meals for his dinner.
The feds are moving forward with plans to wall off the Big Bend region. Some reports say walls are "off the table" in the state park, but DHS hasn't canceled construction contracts or restored the legal protections they stripped.
Nobody is crossing here. Look at those cliffs.
*Forty* senators voted against US weapons for Israel tonight.
~1/2 the chamber & the overwhelming majority of Democrats + allies. No such vote had ever occurred in Congress before November 2024.
A sea-change that will resonate in Tel Aviv, dramatically boost calls for a Dem overhaul + reckoning.
Nice work! And the dog ❤️
From that generation right before X I want to give love to Archaeopteryx. I was fully engaged in the dinosaur renaissance with my offspring
I love this so much! And I really really love that watercolor fish!
