One by one, replace all the monkeys, and eventually, you'll have a cage of monkey who've never been sprayed with water, who not only refuse the banana, but will stop anyone else who tries.
Because that's how we've always done it...
Now, replace a second monkey. Same thing will happen, except the other new monkey will join in on the beating.
Now replace one of the monkeys. New monkey will make for the banana, only find themselves on the receiving end of an ass kicking from the other monkeys. That monkey won't try for the banana again.
For a time, some will try for the bananas, but before long, anyone trying will be set upon by the other monkeys.
Why should you ALWAYS question traditions?
Put in a dozen monkeys in a cage. In the center, put a staircase with a banana at the top. When one monkey climbs the stairs, spray the other monkeys with ice cold water.
