Captain Carl is one of my favorite Phil Hartman characters.

I loved it when Phil/Reagan spoke Arabic and used the phrase “Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho!". It was spoken by Jambi, the magical blue-faced genie who lived in a jeweled box and granted Pee-wee Herman one wish per episode, but was first used in the original stage show (The Pee-wee Herman Show).

Devils Hole pupfish - spring 2025 count - Death Valley National Park (U.S. National Park Service)

There were two earthquakes – one in December 2024 and the other in February 2025 – that triggered waves in the normally still water inside the Devils Hole, adversely affecting the population, resulting in the count of only 38 pupfish in the spring of 2025. /end

Western States Need Water. San Diego Has Extra. Will They Make A Deal?

It doesn’t matter if Trump believes climate change is a hoax, the reality is the amount of water in the Colorado River is dropping due to a chronic, climate-driven shift known as aridification. San Diego built a seawater desalination facility and has offered to help.🌎

Devils Hole Pupfish (Cyprinodon diabolis) | U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

Approx 10,000 years ago, large lakes and rivers were common in Nevada. These pupfish occur naturally only within Devils Hole, left behind as the climate warmed and the waters began to dry up, recede, and separate, isolating species in and around small bodies of water.

Divers tally Devils Hole pupfish, the rarest fish in the world Inside Ash Meadows, the Devils Hole pupfish is still present against the odds.

Twice a year a group of scientists and volunteers from the NPS, USFWS and Nevada Department of Wildlife dive into the Ash Meadows Devils Hole to see how the Devils Hole pupfish fared that season calculated from the first dive of each day and surface counts. /2

Devils Hole pupfish - Wikipedia

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is home to the rarest fish in the world. One of my UNLV biology profs, Dr James Deacon studied them, testified in defense of the pupfish in the 70s during a legal fight over groundwater pumping, and helped establish the Refuge 🧵 🌎

JOINT LETTER
How does "permit reform" legislation target NEPA?
NEPA requires agencies to:
(1) take a hard look at impacts to people, communities, and the environment and disclose those impacts to the public; (2) consider alternatives to avoid and mitigate harm; and (3) provide for public involvement. Sounds like a pretty good idea, right? (Yes, it is).
But back in December, thanks to permit reform backers, the SPEED Act (H.R.4776) aimed to permanently dismantle those protections. It passed in the House then, and it's now pending in the Senate.

If it passes, what would the SPEED Act or equivalent permit reform legislation do?
• Arbitrarily narrow the scope of environmental reviews, paving the way for unchecked resource extraction without proper consideration of environmental and community impacts;
• Permit agencies to ignore new scientific or technical research when preparing an environmental review and thereby risk decisions that harm the public interest, and
• Eviscerate the public's right to seek justice and accountability in federal court.

"Permit reform" in today's extreme right-wing Congress would mean gutting the National Environmental Policy Act and other bedrock enviro laws, which is unacceptable as the Trump admin attacks every environmental protection, special place (Boundary Waters!), & agency that does some good for nature.

We can't keep looking away from his emotional and cognitive issues. The attack on the Pope was the beginning of a full night of melting down.

That’s what should’ve happened in the US after Orban made an appearance at CPAC Dallas in 2022. It was a blaring warning signal about what the Trump administration was going to do in its second term, but most people were not paying attention.
