In my experience airports have gotten much better about time to get the bag to the carousel, so a wait is rare. In fact when I get home to ATL, I’m usually booking it to the claim to beat my bag. Not sure why people try so hard to not check bags.

Free first check bag is usually a pretty low tier loyalty program/airline credit card benefit, and I’d rather not walk through the airport with a bunch of shit. Back pack with my computer. Couple things in case my checked bag doesn’t make it. Goes in the overhead so I keep legroom.
