Attending Protistology Open? Check out @nicolecoots.bsky.social & I's ISOP-sponsored symposium "The Symbiotic Continuum across the Tree of Life" (April 20th @ 11 AM)! We have an amazing lineup of speakers including Ondřej Pomahač, @mixotrophe.bsky.social, & Gillian Gile #ProtistsOnSky #Symbiosis
I am extremely excited that my first first-author paper from my PhD is finally out 😆!! We developed a new CLEM workflow to measure lipid densities at the nanoscale. So if you are into lipids and super-resolution imaging approaches, this one is for you: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
It’s incredibly hard to study lipids in biological membranes on the nanoscale. You need near-perfect information on both membrane ultrastructure and lipid density. Lipid-CLEM, now out in @natcellbio.nature.com brought to you by @mathilda95.bsky.social changes that:

Excited to announce I’m starting a new lab at @gmivienna.bsky.social (Vienna BioCentre) in Sept 2026
We study how carbon fixation is inherited and maintained in algae using cryo-ET, imaging, environmental sampling&more
Looking for people who want to build the lab together, get in touch!

And the best parts about it - it's not over!
More and more data is coming out from #TREC and the science will be fantastic to engage with.
And my truck? Well it's an #EMBL facility open to the scientific community.
If you're interested have a look www.embl.org/groups/mobil... or reach out
@embl.org at its best: collaborative, open, transformative, and just the right amount of crazy. Dreaming of mechanistic cell biology *in the natural environment*? Dream no more, rent the AML.

Researcher Florian Wollweber standing next to a cryo-focused ion beam microscope in a laboratory, with technical infrastructure visible in the background.
The origin of eukaryotic cells continues to be one of the greatest mysteries in biology.
EMBL Grenoble is excited to welcome Florian Wollweber, who will use cutting-edge imaging techniques to study Asgard archaea — microbes closely related to our earliest ancestors. 🦠🔬

And @veslemoykaen.bsky.social joining from far away Lausanne
It was a really fun couple of weeks in the lab !
I also very much enjoyed being in full handle of the #Zeiss 3Dsim scope provided generously for us to explore the various samples.
This is part of our ExÂME project between @dudinlab.bsky.social @gautamdey.bsky.social Tom Richards and @moorefound.bsky.social
The selection of samples was incredibly diverse, both across size but also across the tree. Thanks for being a fantastic bunch! Hope it will advance your research questions!

Give them a follow if you haven’t!
The Dudin lab and their expansion visitors having some well deserved friday drinks and games
A group of visitors in their lab coats busily working to get their cells and tissues expanded, stained and ready for microscopy
Over the last two weeks the Dudin Lab expanded two-fold and it’s been a blast!
We are hosting a group of amazing visitors that stopped by with their own species and samples to get started with expansion microscopy.
It was a ton of fun, very much looking forward to pictures to come ❤️

On this day in 2021, I landed in a snowy, lockdown-silenced Heidelberg to start my lab. 5 years later we are a force to reckon with in our field, and the first generation are striking out on their own. I couldn’t be more proud, & grateful to them and our wonderful collaborators around the world 🌍 🧪
Another #notTHECover unfortunately.
But this gorgeous, Tron-like vibe, drawn by the amazing @munafomarzia.bsky.social for our recent #ExM work with @gautamdey.bsky.social & @centriolelab.bsky.social will still be printed out in the lab.

We hope that integrating models with data will unlock new predictive capacity for mixotrophs--and beyond. Huge thanks to Ginger for scouting us, and to collaborators @suleles.bsky.social, @gautamdey.bsky.social, @fmikus.bsky.social, Julian Jacobs, and Kevin Archibald for building skills & ideas!
We’re excited to announce the opening of the Geneva Expansion Microscopy Facility (GenExM)!
GenExM is a full-service U-ExM platform (U-ExM, Cryo-ExM, iU-ExM), delivering nanoscale imaging.
Led by Dr. Olivier Mercey, GenExM welcomes academic & industrial collaborations.

Preprint alert 🔔 Organosulfur compounds support carbon and energy metabolism in chemosynthetic symbiosis. Happy to see this cool collaboration with @organosulfur.bsky.social and others out 🥳
So proud to watch Jana turn a side quest into an entire research programme. Couldn’t imagine a more well-deserved outcome. 😍

How do new centromeres evolve while staying compatible with the division machinery?
Discover it in our new Nature paper! We show centromeres transition gradually via a mix of drift, selection, and sex, reaching new states that still work with the kinetochore.

So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

Big thanks again to all co-authors (especially Bego) and collaborators for their contributions! 👏
New preprint 🥳! We made photoclickable HaloTag ligands to precisely control protein labeling on living cells. With it, we can do some cool multicolor stuff. Huge congrats to Franzi and all co-authors! Check it out 👇
