I think planned obsolescence is a factor- the older stuff you could have a go at fixing it yourself. Or you knew someone who could (my dad never found something he couldn’t take apart and put back together again).

I’d say we do a better job than that in the UK. Certainly in Scotland, can’t really speak for elsewhere.
