Something something dark mode

I love trains, but our cities are no longer built to accommodate its use, and it makes me sad.

Even economically, prices have become so much more expensive, than the trip I made that made me ride over 2000km in my car would have cost me twice as much by train, would have been significantly longer and I would have needed a taxi for the last part.

However, if you go anywhere besides Paris, you're fucked. It works if you visit a city for personal or professional reason, but if you need to go a bit further a car will be mandatory to travel, making train a secondary choice.

France has onr of the best railway network in the world, yet it is impaired by local politics who don't want to spend money or are payed by other lobbies (construction, air travel, etc.)
Result : we can move to one major city to the next in 3h, downtown to downtown.

I come from a long line of "cheminots" (railway workers) since my great-grandfather who started working for the French National Railroad Company (SNCF) after his demobilization post WW1. I too worked there for years when I was a student, used trains daily for personally and professionally.

I am going to my grandmother’s funeral at the other end of the country and picked up my family half way to drive them and back.

Drove 500 miles yesterday.
Will do the same today.
And again tomorrow.
I am already exhausted beyond belief 😭

Meanwhile, I learned that my grandmother passed during the night.
She was my last direct relative, and will have to handle her funeral as my father is no longer here to do his duty.
I will make myself even more scarce for a few weeks.
