At this point I think the best explanation is related to the connections, yeah; at first I thought a process I was running borked the SSD, then I thought that overheating might've done it, but the fact that it still works with the adapter implies that it was something else
The bad: my secondary hard drive hosting a lot of archived stuff suddenly stopped being visible as a drive and eventually vanished entirely on Disk Manager
The good: after unplugging the drive and accessing it with an external IDE/SATA adapter I was able to access everything

Palindromic 1D cellular automata have rules that are the same even when mirrored. These have some interesting properties and my game lets you know when you get one.

Thanks a lot, both for playing & for the neat (and kind) insights! I'm really glad you enjoyed the game; shame about the crashes, had that happen myself once as well and I *maybe* captured the cause but it's really hard to test. Congrats on beating it!
