New plans will break the link between FSM and pupil premium. Seems like a positive step for making sure low income families that fall outside of the narrow FSM eligibility criteria are counted. #WideningParticipation teams will need to think about the change in school-based targeting approaches.

Not that this isn’t a very important issue to dissect, but it shows where the discourse is focused right now.
In my doctoral research, it's rare to come across something focused on white working-class girls. The overall success story of girls in education is obscuring significant inequalities experienced by some. #Edusky #AcademicSky

The implications? As contextual admissions become standard across the sector, understanding their multi-faceted influence on the admissions pipeline is crucial for impactful #WideningParticipation 6/7
We theorise that contextual offers act as an uncertainty-reduction mechanism, making highly competitive courses feel like a 'safer bet' for high-attaining students from under-represented backgrounds 5/7
Key finding #2: While the policy successfully enabled enrolment for a small # of students who missed the standard offer, it appeared to have greater effects on encouraging students from under-represented backgrounds to firmly accept their offer of a place (1.45x) 4/7
Key finding #1: Students with contextual offers were 1.58x more likely to enrol than similar peers with standard offers. But the impact goes beyond just grades... 3/7
Using mixed-methods contribution analysis with data from
LSE, we investigated how contextual offer policies affect enrolment patterns & student decision-making in competitive university admissions 2/7
New paper alert! 🎉 #AcademicSky Our research on contextual offers as a widening access tool in #HigherEd is out now (open access): onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Proud to share this work with co-author Jonathan Schulte examining their effectiveness at highly selective universities 🧵 1/7
Interesting stats: 68% of young people want to go to university. Just 8% of grads regret going to uni whereas 43% of non-grads aged 18-24 wish they'd gone to university #AcademicSky

Yes! It feels like it reflects a pre-internet time where you’d be flipping through a physical journal. I’d love to see it binned.

I keep meaning to buy a print of the scene where they’re walking to the cafe in the dark; it must be the most beautiful illustration I’ve come across in a children’s book
I’ve never heard of this, what a great policy. I feel like a rarely see examples of initiatives structurally addressing gender pay gaps for women rather than e.g. a workshop on how to not have imposter syndrome.

The zine has had a big life since 2017 thanks mostly to twitter and I am hoping this place can now offer it a new reach.
Please share if this is your jam 🙏✨ sofizine.com
