That's where I was for a while! (Though I didn't HATE where it was going, parts of it did scare me! Which I think is a valid and in some respects intended response. Having characters you've built over months go through things like this can be scary, and - sometimes - SHOULD be!)
I think part of the reason they keep going is sunk cost! Like they're invested and even if they don't like the way it's going, they have to see where it goes
