Oh definitely, I think they do sincerely miss the single income suburban family 50s shit but underlying all of it is that they really just miss the pre-civil rights era when they didn’t have to be confronted with other people’s misery

I look it as more that the 90s were when America became a fully consumption based society, older generations seem to be more nostalgic for a way of life, 90s kids miss SuperSoakers and the Pizza Hut buffet because by that point consumption was our way of life
I think it’s interesting that millenial nostalgia is almost completely based on stuff - toys, restaurants, etc. Other than mourning the loss of pre-social media childhoods and concerts with no cellphones, I don’t really see much wistfulness about “society” in the 90s the way you do about the 50s
For his long awaited reunion with Kevin Durant
Yeah I read a bit about that after someone else mentioned it, I had no idea - between his military industrial complex farewell address and the phone convos between him and JFK during the missile crisis I figured he had kept his wits about him til the end, but apparently not
Yeah, I should have said “would” not “should”, I was just pointing out the two presidents who were physically incapacitated to the point where they couldn’t perform the duties of president
Clairo and Gracie Abrams are good examples - both are talented enough that they don't NOT deserve success, but at any given time there are thousands of college aged female singer-songwriters trying to break through, and they were able to bypass that part of the process
yeah - it's like the FA Cup in English soccer, anybody *can* win, but Premier League teams get a bye through the first 8 qualifying rounds
By hook or by crook we're going to beat Wash U this year - Hamilton Cook has dragged them to victory in the battle of the Washingtons for the last time
Sturgill Simpson does an unbelievable cover of this song (there's a recorded version but this live one is exceptional) youtu.be/cVu0xSYy6YU?...
Martin Page - In the House of Stone and Light is another first balloter www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIa9...
For me, Boy Meets Girl - Waiting on a Star to Fall is the cream of the crop - it may not be adult contemporary/MOR/soft rock enough to be an exemplar of the Grocerycore genre but it's on the playlist for the local chain and it's the only place I ever hear it, and it always puts a hop in my step
It's got a bit more of a crisp bite to it and (at least the Sioux City brand version) has a wintergreen-y note to it that normal root beer doesn't
And putting the quote marks around "stuff" is a clear attempt to imitate his style but that isn't where he'd use them, because that almost makes sense - they're usually deployed in random and inscrutable ways
Also - if they were to try and invoke the 25th for mental instability, as far as I can tell there's nothing stopping the president from just firing any cabinet secretary who would vote to invoke it, so it's a moot point anyway
Ohhh, right, right, I should have said "would have been" and not "should have been"
In what way? In a “Wilson sucked so we should have got him out sooner” way or is there something specific you mean
Yeah - Woodrow Wilson after his stroke and Garfield after being shot are, at least off the top of my head, the only two cut-and-dried cases where it probably should have been invoked
I've always wondered how this felt - a lot of the adult contemporary stuff they play is formulaic and commercial enough that I doubt the artists care much, but it's still gotta be weird to hear a song you wrote about having your heart broken by your college girlfriend playing in Target
That's actually the thing though, to most people if you're a Manhattanite who rubs elbows with super famous people, you're RICH rich - nevermind that the a car dealership baron in their town probably makes more than a professor and indie filmmaker
He's always reminded me of one of the anonymous bureaucrats sitting around the desk in Dr Evil's lair
I think some degree of protectiveness is smart (there are obvious safety/security risks that female players face just by virtue of being women that men don't) but if there's interest in a topic, somebody is going to fill the information vacuum, and it's better for the team to be out in front of that
I'm glad you mentioned Margin Call - it got good reviews when it was released but mostly just came and went pretty quietly, I don't think it was marketed well (or at all), but even if it may be a tier below Michael Clayton it deserves to be talked about in the same conversation, it's great
I’m glad that he’s showing what (white) American Christianity is really about. The thirst for domination and power to the point of blasphemy. They’ve been calling him the chosen one, an avatar of God, because he allows them to hate marginalized people. He can do this because they won’t abandon him.
I've had this convo on here before but if Benjamin Butler had accepted Lincoln's offer to be his vice president rather than having it devolve upon Andrew Johnson, we would be living in a much different country right now
Not enough people know the only reason Falwell Sr got involved in politics is because segregated private schools lost their tax exempt status. Dig deep enough and nearly everything bad in this country is a product of racism
It's definitely a refreshing change of pace for someone out of the area to recognize it for something other than "hey, isn't that where the DC Snipers were from?". I grew up playing sports with/against Jake Locker but somehow the NFL player isn't the most famous person I knew in school lol
Wow, no way - what brought him out here? Work, school, or just likes hiking and skiing and shit? There's been a pretty been influx of out of towners over the last 15-20 years but most of them are from California/Oregon/Colorado
A family friend was an assistant coach on the Canadian national team for years and started a club program down here in Bellingham that a bunch of my friends played on, so I know the basic rules, but I still only have a rudimentary grasp on strategy and stuff. It's more complex than it looks
There was a point in the 90s when it felt like it could have captured the attention that rugby eventually did here, it was on TV pretty frequently and super fun to watch
