We view science as a meritocracy, how does DEI effect productivity? This is the question I asked Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai @ideastemcanada.bsky.social and he went off on a tangent all about productivity! Merit will be addressed next week!

@ideastemcanada.bsky.social has a great tagline which is - Inclusive science is good science. I asked one of the founders to explain what the tagline means and why they chose it. With such an important and fundamental tagline, will it change how STEM is performed?

Is feeling proud of a client. Last week we prepared for a salary negotiation. Today they nailed it and received an improved offer. I see clients when the are nervous and worried so that they can appear polished and professional when it counts.

Have you ever wondered why is DEI relevant to science? Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai @ideastemcanada.bsky.social provides three examples of why considering DEI in scientific research actually makes the science better; by asking better questions, and improving data collection and analysis.

At the end of the last published video with Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai @ideastemcanada.bsky.social I mentioned that I didn't see why it was so hard to implement DEI accommodations/accessibility supports. Therefore this is an unexpected bonus video where he explains why that might be.

Watching Dr. Sethuraman Panachanathan give the keynote at the National Postdoctoral Association annual meeting. An amazing extemporaneous speech which is positive and uplifting for the future of academia, careers and research. #NPA2026AC

My friend and colleague Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai @ideastemcanada.bsky.social is the world’s first congenitally blind geneticist and I asked him to talk about his new initiative IDEA-STEM. He is proof that individuals who are differently abled can be successful in STEM.

I love her reaction afterwards as she says "That's what I'm f*ing talking about." Her joy is infectious.
I am excited to be returning to the National Postdoctoral Association annual conference, this time taking part in a panel for the plenary session. I will be joining Mark Moldwin, Heather Trepal, Rian Lund Dahlberg, Harry Sterling for a session moderated by Madhumita Joshi.

This resonates so much! If I had a dollar every time someone asked me to point them towards a career I would be so much richer! This is why I love regular reviews of needs and values to ensure that even if the path is unusual, it is the right path for you.
Happy birthday to one of my favourite haters, Charles Darwin
I look forward to seeing everyone in San Francisco in March!
This is my most viewed video and it all concerns #GraduateSchool interview questions. Good luck if you are interviewing this year and please share widely. This is going to be a very competitive year and if this helps give someone the edge I will be very happy!

Please share as with the reduced number of #GradSchool spots available, this year is going to be particularly challenging.
Congratulations you have been invited to participate in interviews for graduate school. Here is some advice for before, during and after the interview.

Just had a chat about an upcoming presentation in February. I will be tailoring my negotiation talk more than usual for this institution based on their feedback from last year. This is the real joy of being able to provide a service specifically for each population depending on their needs.
I am 2 episodes in to a certain documentary and had to go and watch this, then look up the words so I could follow along better. I think tomorrow might be a 2Pac kind of day as I prepare for Christmas!

This is great news! I hope undergraduate students are able to take full advantage of this program once they are, able to.

Crumbs, the author of this article is incredibly brave and resilient. I know from talking with friends with disabilities that the ability to work with accommodations is littered with hoops you have to navigate. I hope that she is able to complete her PhD and continue to have a prosperous career.
