@nycschools.bsky.social when asked about the school calendar next year:
Trump: "Millions of American small businesses, including corner stores. What is a corner store? I've never heard that term. I know what a corner store is but I've never heard it described-- a corner store. Who the hell wrote that?"
For no particular reason, I’m noting that Varg Vikernes released an AI-slop Nazi neofolk record last year
Trump is angry at the Pope, so he has canceled an $11 million contract with Catholic Charities to shelter and care for migrant children who enter the U.S. alone

There was literally a pangolin that flew combat sorties with the CIA in a dirty war in Laos that then died after drinking too much gin, so there’s at least one pangolin whose record is morally ambiguous
New season of The Pitt and Dr. Robby looks INSANE
I agree...a New England family traveling to Florida is a longer journey than a German family going to Italy or France or whatever, so it is much "easier" for some other countries to travel internationally.
Still, you don't get as much of a cultural change from CT->FL as you do from DE->IT.
The broader understanding I get from this is that the way Americans are kept from travel--through poverty/debt, and also through being messaged that it's less important than a fancier (domestic) lifestyle--is a real crime, a truly devastating thing.
Families with much less money than we had travel all the time; my parents valued trying to approach a middle-class life, owning a house, two cars, donating to a church, paying fees for sports and clubs, etc. over travel. It's the American way.
I had a pretty low-travel upbringing, which I recognize now is not neutral but an actual deficiency. It was due to not having a lot of money but also being in an American milieu of not understanding how important being traveled is.

y'all know that Steve Roud is still alive? history is real close
(half of that time was spent writing a literary research paper about the book, but that still involved just poring through the pages every day, so it counts as part of the 5-month odyssey. I know that book rreaaalllllyyy well, now, though)
Looked back at my 2021-22 12th grade ELA calendar (our first year fully back in-person, with the kids absolutely cooked from a year of COVID stuff), and we read "The Bluest Eye" from Oct.19-Mar.18. I love Toni Morrison but five fucking months of slowly re-reading that book every single day ended me.
this is also generally true for reading nowadays, for semi-related reasons (more because social-media-attention-spanned people don't read outside class). The combo of these two needs has absolutely devastated the ability of ELA classes to read multiple works of lit each year.

Genius "You might also like" section, recommending "The Manifold Curiosity" and "Marathon" by Kayo Dot, followed by "Cool, Daddy Cool" by Kid Rock. I have no idea what led the engine to draw this conclusion.
