It's the total lack of consequences, and more so the "cager" mentality of being in a steel box with no connection to the streets, the people, the environment around you. It's so very broken.

Guangzhou isn’t just building bike lanes. It's building a healthier, more liveable city.

With over 6,000 km. of greenways, it quietly boasts one of the world's largest cycling networks.

What was once overlooked is now impossible to ignore: a vital link in their modern, multimodal transport system.

It's not hilarious, it's how you run an independent media business. You want a professionally made podcast that releases nearly daily episodes and employs a dozen people or so to run on the charity of the publisher? They need ads and supporters to sustain it.

Motor vehicle fatality rate in U.S. by year - Wikipedia

The moral panic over ebikes while motor vehicle fatalities have shot up over the last 15 years…is annoying.

In the US,

32,479 traffic fatalities in 2011.

42,795 motor vehicle fatalities in 2022.

It's wild how much mental energy I expend trying to not get killed and also not inconvenience any drivers on the road. It bothers me that I care about the latter, it's horrible that I have to worry about the former.

No actual insight, except to say that figure skating seems really flashy and extroverted as a sport, which seems to be the opposite of the Norwegian culture (in my mind) and compared to the sports they do well in like XC skiing.

Soooo... Why did the @thestar.com go hard with a story stating the Feb 8 opening as fact, when they just had two anonymous sources "with knowledge" of the date. That story was insufficiently sourced to me. And this is embarrassing.

A tangled web! lol. I sort of saw it the other way! I also might more likely say "east side" for Cabbagetown, but the East End for Leslieville or The Beach(es). Not that either are more logical than the other.

P.S. is this the beginnings of a plot to launch an East End Phoenix?

What's your take on those who consider "the east end" to start at Yonge? I think that makes sense if you're talking about downtown specifically, but in a wider Toronto sense, I see the valley as the divider. It's just a funny thing I've noticed some people do. Maybe an older generation thing too

The thing I love about this podcast is that it's like hearing three smart Toronto urbanism thinkers who I see a lot of on socials come to life in audio form! They talk! Give them a listen!

Meanwhile in Toronto, the new Finch West LRT (Line 6) is shut down AGAIN! What a fucking embarrassment for this city, Metrolinx, and the consortium that built that line! #TTC #TOpoli

I don't like the industry or the model either, but these workers are doing it to survive. If they don't get orders, they don't earn. The system is broken for sure. I'd say order if you must, but tip GENEROUSLY and be extra kind to your rider today and every day

I know we measure snowfall in cm, but this record breaking snow was super light and airy. If less than half that depth fell, but it was dense and wet, we'd be much worse off. Why don't they give the official measure in mm of water or something, i.e. the actual amount of moisture that fell?

Seeing so many Americans post about cutting ties with family and friends who are supporting MAGA and ICE now. It's sad but totally understandable. The divide is too vast. The fabric of shared reality has been torn. Even if the country avoids civil war, generational harm has been done.

Watching Japanese TV is always a trip, as news and talk shows still use these beautifully made physical prop boards with sliding panels to reveal different things. I wonder if studios have in house print shops!

I've read about how GenZs are not drinking/partying like previous few gens did (Xer here) and generally shun that lifestyle. Many reasons (hi COVID! hey cost of living!) but I bet the constant public image curation of the IG generation is a big part. Sloppy drunk pics might not go well on the feed.

No transit agency involved with the Finch West LRT answered when asked whether inclement weather was the problem or if the issues were more structural.

“All of Metrolinx’s projects are planned and constructed to run in adverse weather conditions, including snow,” a spokesperson for Metrolinx said, via the TTC. Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency, has overseen the construction of both the Finch West and the Eglinton Crosstown LRTs.

“We have no insights into the mechanics of the switches,” said Stuart Green, spokesperson for the TTC, about the Finch problems. The TTC manages switches on both its streetcar and subway tracks.

“Metrolinx built, owns and maintains the line,” Green added. “I can only offer what they have provided.”

Although the TTC operates the trains on the Finch West line, it is maintained by Mosaic Transit Group, a private company contracted by Metrolinx. Mosaic did not respond to requests for comment.

An owner that denies problems. An operator that has no ability to fix problems. And a maintainer that just doesn’t respond to questions. Doesn’t seem like a great way to run a railroad. www.thestar.com/news/gta/why...
