1/ "No family should ever have to ask if the NHS is doing everything that they can to save their son."

Jordan Tooke had a learning disability and kidney disease. During his dialysis treatment, his line detached and an air bubble entered his vein. He suffered a brain injury and died 3 days later.

Disabilities are "my greatest weakness and my greatest strengths" - felt so strongly on a personal level! Such heartfelt and important words from Celia Chartres-Aris to start the day! #disabilitysummit25 @nhsconfed.org

Any one of us might need disability benefits at any point in our lives.

We all deserve a well-funded welfare system that enables us to live full and independent lives, no matter what unexpected challenges we may face.

Being disabled is expensive…

Far more expensive than being non-disabled.

And that’s just for bare-minimum survival, regardless of actually trying to have a decent life too (which disabled people also deserve).

1/4 The UK Government wants to make changes to the benefit system, but nothing will change until 2026.

Normalize letting disabled people share their experiences without offering unsolicited advice. If they want advice they will ask, but chances are they've already tried everything. Listen & learn.

Not quite sure how to feel about NHS England being abolished by current government - feeling apprehensive, and fearful for what this might mean?

What happens if there's another government turnover and the NHS is the hands of an even more turbulent party...?

Uncertain doesn't nearly cover it. ā˜ ļø

We either all have rights, or none of us have rights

You need to be willing to stand up for the people who are different than you. The disabled, trans, immigrants, marginalized & people of colour

Its easy to stand up when you think you’re at risk, the true test is if you will speak out for others

When it feels like the government doesn't care about the health AND employment inequalities that disabled people experience, it's people like @nadiawhittomemp.bsky.social that give me hope for the future - other MPs, start taking notes and STEP UP for the disabled people in your constituencies!

We can't go back to ā€œstrivers vs skiversā€ to justify disability benefits cuts.

I can’t emphasize enough how much accessibility benefits everyone. Ramps, elevators, ventilated air, automatic doors. You caring about accessibility is literally caring about your future. You will become disabled unless you die young. Investing in the disability community is investing in yourself.

I’m not ā€œdifferently abledā€
I’m not ā€œspecialā€
I’m not ā€œsuperpoweredā€
I’m not ā€œdis-abledā€

I’m disabled.
It’s not a bad or dirty word. It’s just the truth.

A company using disabled people in their advertisements and a company valuing disabled people as employees are apparently two different things.

Pulmonary fibrosis, a terminal disease affecting 15,000–20,000 people in the UK each year, is worsened by inequality.

Those in deprived areas or far from hospitals die sooner from the condition.

Access to healthcare should never be a postcode lottery.

How the Definition of Trauma Has Changed Over Time Trauma is a changing concept. What does it cover, and how is it being used?

ā€œTo understand the nature of #trauma & how to prevent or treat #PTSD requires some agreement on how to measure the phenomenon..When the word is watered down to include any #stressful event, it becomes meaningless..": https://buff.ly/3T8GgMw from @psychologytoday.com #MentalHealth #spoonie

Andy Callow Curated Article Index This is a summary of all the non-weeknoting stuff I’ve written, consolidated in a single place.

Over the years I've written loads of articles on Medium. I thought it was about time I did a bit of a curation. This article attempts to present it in themes for easier consumption/avoiding.

TRULY - It's an absolutely exhausting, demoralising and heartbreaking system that we disabled folks have to endure *just* to try and survive with any quality of life!!!! A truer statement has never been spoken before!!!

I don’t know a single disabled person who had any type of assistance ā€œhanded outā€ to them.

I do, however, know of countless disabled people who need to prove their permanent disability every year with seemingly endless paperwork and hardly get by.
