Just nominated for an Emmy, we are so proud of our friends at Pale Blue Dot Films (paleblue.film) and grateful that there are still people with the talent and the courage to find the facts and tell the truth.

Anyway, AI is a managerial technology that came out of fields where researchers act more like managers than researchers and this is not a coincidence. It’s fundamentally related to why certain people jumped at the chance to try to build certain kinds of systems that devalued (other people’s) work.

Last month, University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin approved a proposal to establish a College of Computing and Artificial Intelligence funded by private corporations and philanthropy.
Mnookin said the move was a response to the inevitable creep of artificial intelligence into all disciplines of academia. Rather than reject AI, she envisioned a university that capitalized on this change by making artificial intelligence a "hub" connecting the humanities to computer science.

On the first day of my economics elective this spring, my professor said we would be expected to use NotebookLM to pass his class. He had lengthened the coding assignments so that they would be doable only with the help of AI. The reading assignments were longer, too: ten 40-page papers per week, which he asked us to feed into AI for a summary rather than read ourselves. When it came to lectures, he told us to simply upload the slides to AI and ask it to teach us whatever he failed to explain properly in class.

BLEAK. Bleak. I’d been paying attention to Columbia selling out its governance to the Trump admin, not so much its stance on AI.

Thank you to everyone who has shared this. The hearing is over for today. DHS has filed a motion to pretermit (end Guan's asylum application in the US) and have him sent to Uganda - where he'd be at risk of being sent to China. The hearing to decide that will be held 12 January.

ICE Holding Chinese Man Who Documented Uyghur Camps Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

When Mamdani was asked about calling Trump a “despot,” referring to himself as Trump’s “worst nightmare” on the campaign trail, and suggesting Trump had a fascist agenda, Mamdani sidestepped and said he and the president had been clear on their views.

He went on to say their meeting did not focus on areas of disagreement, “which there are many,” but on serving New Yorkers.

“And I’ve been called much worse than a despot,” Trump chimed in. “It’s not that insulting.”

Moments later, another reporter tried to clarify if Mamdani was affirming his view that Trump is a fascist. The mayor-elect started to answer, but Trump cut him off.

“That’s ok, you can just say that stuff,” Trump said, turning to him and waving his hand to dismiss it.

“It’s easier,” Trump said with a smile. “It’s easier than explaining it.”

Trump Says Mamdani Can Call Him a ‘Despot’ & ‘Fascist’

Trump gushed about NYC’s mayor-elect during their meeting & says he’s a “very rational person” & NOT a “jihadist”—after previously calling him a “lunatic.” www.thedailybeast.com/suck-up-trum... Otoh who wouldn’t let Mamdani call them a fascist?

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.

The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.

People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.

And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

I will not support a deal that does nothing to make health care more affordable.

We are in a health care emergency. A simple one-year extension of these tax credits would cost less than Donald Trump’s $40 billion bailout for Argentina.

A vote for this bill is a mistake.
