it really is just like. man. even though Sam did go on to have a family and all that, I'm sure that he never fully returned to the Shire. I'm sure that part of him left with Frodo, a part of him that will never return.

reading lotr and I can't get over how often Frodo says things like "my dearest Sam," "my faithful Sam," "my sweet Sam," etc. genuinely I cannot stop thinking about the level of care and devotion expressed between them. Frodo saying that he may never go back to the Shire & Sam saying he won't either

something something frodo baggins & the debilitating weight of obligation accompanied by samwise gamgee and the determined dedication of genuine love & care & how frodo may have managed to resist the ring despite the fact that it took over his life but sam only ever cared about frodo's wellbeing

I genuinely and firmly believe that if I had watched lord of the rings/the hobbit in high school I could have been saved. from what? who knows. but I could have been.

do y'all ever think about Frodo shouting "I'm going to Mordor alone!" and Sam shouting "I know, and I'm coming with you!" and Frodo shouting "You can't swim!" and Sam just about drowning in his desperation to cross the water to Frodo's boat anyway? do u ever think about Sam looking @ him like this??

He's a man who is trying to do the most good with what time he has left, but that doesn't take away the fact that he was an active participant in what was carried out against Ishval, and I wish people would stop ignoring that 😭😭

when it comes to the trauma and guilt that he himself has experienced as one of the men responsible for the genocide of Ishval. The Hughes we meet during the series run is a man who has likely done a LOT of reflection and who, according to Hawkeye, likely knew exactly what Roy wanted for them all.

This is framed by Roy as something honorable or aspirational, but we see in the scene where they have this initial interaction that Hughes has a very visceral reaction when directly confronted with the atrocities he has committed and that he seems to be much better at compartmentalizing

"...And when I return home...I will swallow every horrible thing I've done here, and I will *smile* when I'm with her. I swear on my life, I *will* make her happy."

And Roy's response to this at the end of that OVA?

'Hughes, you're a strong man. A much stronger man than I'll ever be.'

"There's one thing I've learned in combat: raising a family with the woman you love may be a universal right, but you have to *earn* that love, firstβ€”understand?! And I will do *anything it takes* to be the man she loves. I'll *survive* this war!

part of humanity that persists regardless of that, and that is hope. hope to grow and improve and to CHANGE. it's why Hughes's response to Roy is what it is.

1 month ago 0 0 1 0

this is the whole point of what Roy says to him in "Yet Another Man's Battlefield" when he asks "Can you really hold the woman you love with your bloodstained hands?"

THAT is the whole point of Team Mustang. they have done horrible things to innocent people but life goes on, & there is an immutable

1 month ago 1 0 1 0

oh ABSOLUTELY, I'm just sick of people acting like Hughes wasn't complicit in what happened or like he didn't also murder innocent civilians 😭 like I love him & he's a wonderful husband & father! but the whole point is that no one thing can define you, good or bad. he is lovely! he's also a murderer

ok first serious post in months:

Maes Hughes is still a war criminal, and if you deny that fact, then you are deliberately misinterpreting his character on a fundamental level.
