Book bags full of books, a mailer, and a tabletop ping pong setup.

Okay, it's a tough time for northern Minnesota, with Lake Superior threatened by stripped protections. And today we brought books to swap with our neighbors. And there's still tabletop ping pong, and I sent my mom a contributor copy of Ploughshares. Sometimes it snows in April, says Prince.

Ploughshares cover with Jessica Roeder.

I have a story in the new @pshares.bsky.social ! It's a beautiful issue edited by Annie Finch. Just look at that cover . . . I can't wait to read. The story is a circus one and will be in my collection "The Bones of the Mouse Make the Cat" @regalhouse.bsky.social in 2028.

two golden pages — Jessica Roeder I have been working on future-book things lately, and I miss the days of drafting new work. Most mornings I take some time applying paint to a book. Here is one spread. The text reads: “their children...

A pair of castanets in black.

A pair of castanets in black.

I'm practicing castanets, a little each day. It maybe relieves stress. When I first owned these as a teen, I must have learned to play, but I don't remember a word of instruction. Make noise. And please attend your No Kings rally.

Because we all need bunnies. These two look just like our first two companion buns, Barley (gold) and Grendel (gray), who unfortunately, um, would have bit each other if they got this close. But they were sweethearts, hilarious, and teachers.

The American people do not want war.

Trump is threatening an illegal strike on Iran. This will do nothing but bring needless death and destruction.

We cannot let warmongers override Congress's power. No war with Iran.

Blue paint on a page from Moby-Dick leaves a new text.

Today's blog post at jessicaroeder.com is from The Other Whale, my paint-on-paper erasure of Moby-Dick. Text is: “and where is the whale? / and / what can be / whale / when / I mark my whalebook / I am driving at / I admit / so much / skin / more tender than the skin of the new-born child”

Deep gratitude to @regalhouse.bsky.social and @heatherbelladams.bsky.social for this honor. These stories have been in my mind and daily life for years, and it is overwhelming, in a good way, to know that they will be together in print. To everyone with a long-lived writing project: May you persist.

Hello, Jennifer. I'm rusty too. Could I ask: I currently have two manuscripts, one literary fiction and one speculative YA. Should I query one at a time but look for people who represent both categories, query different agents, or something else?

That is allowed! Thank you, and love.
