(P.S. Newbie golfers & experienced golfers are all welcome! I learned last year that the culture around golf in Scotland is that it is very much an everyman's -- and everywoman's -- game)

If you enjoy playing golf & want to present your Applied Microeconomics research, submit to this terrific conference organized by @davidajaeger.bsky.social at University of St Andrews
I went last year, and I'll be attending again this year

Huge thanks to refine.ink for alerting us to the mistake (and thanks to @bengolub.bsky.social and team for creating such a useful tool)
Bottom line: refine.ink is great!
We use a similar formula in my new NAFTA paper, however, so I'm glad to get it right
(NAFTA paper here: users.nber.org/~notom/resea...)
Fortunately, the mistake does not affect any of the welfare cost calculations in our published paper since we never used the formula directly; it was only used in the paper to build intuition.
All of the welfare results in our published paper come from solving our model numerically.
I posted a short note correcting a mistake in an approximation formula in a recent publication of mine

After Claudia Goldin became the first woman to win a solo Nobel in economics, she got hundreds of invitations.
She accepted three.
One was advising WNBA players on a labor deal. She helped players land the biggest % raise in US sports history.

Just noticed that @talgross.bsky.social & I are beating out von Neumann & Morgenstern!
(I'm proud of our book, but it's definitely not better than vN-M)

So weird: there's more than one scammy memorial site inviting donations or tree-planting in my dad's memory.
We are not asking for that, but if people feel moved, donations in lieu of flowers to www.aclu-mn.org, www.aclu.org, or www.eff.org
Econ folks, can you help get the word out?
Our interpretation of the results is that the fact that the mortality effects are largest for working-age men suggests at least some role for the direct effects of job loss, but the fact that there are mortality effects for other age groups suggests that's also not the only channel.
The research design assumes that the increase in deaths caused by NAFTA can be identified by geographic variation in exposure to the tariff reductions, but we don't know how much comes from the NAFTA-induced job losses directly versus other channels.
Very nice article discussing my new paper studying the effects of NAFTA on mortality: www.nytimes.com/2026/03/13/u...

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon has been arrested, a Justice Department official said. Lemon livestreamed a demonstration that interrupted a church service in St. Paul, Minnesota, earlier this month that protested Trump's immigration crackdown in the area reut.rs/4q3X1FL
Very excited to see this conference back alive!
I really enjoyed the interactions between econometricians & applied micro people
I have been hearing recently that many people don't know about the ability to submit to AEJ-Policy (or any of the other AEJs) after submitting to AER-Insights (following the same process that existed going from the AER to the AEJs)

Great article in @theglobeandmail.com discussing my new working paper studying the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in Canada www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art...

See, e.g., the figures from my Garthwaite et al. Brookings paper using the near universe of hospitalizations in 20 states: www.brookings.edu/wp-content/u...)
I think it's more about the risks of using Census/ACS/CPS survey samples than state-level designs, per se (+ the usual concerns with weak instruments). For example, the state-level Medicaid expansion natural experiment seems to work perfectly well IMO.
Putting together the list of papers and posters that I want to see at the ASSA Annual Meeting, and this poster session project (by @michaelbriskin.bsky.social) looks interesting
Paper is here: mbbriskin.github.io/files/Briski...
If you're at the ASSA mtgs and are interested in gender gaps in the labor market, please join this session Monday 8 am. To draw out the links between the papers, there will be one discussant, a nice idea suggested by @profnoto.bsky.social; Camille Landais is generously playing this role.

This is such a bizarre talking point; I've thankfully never had to use most of the types of insurance that I have for me and my family
This is a good excuse to share my WSJ letter to the editor explaining that "not filing a claim doesn’t mean you didn’t need insurance" www.wsj.com/opinion/the-...
Useful background: "Child care centers were previously protected under a 'sensitive locations' directive that advised ICE to not conduct enforcement in places like schools and day cares. But President Donald Trump removed that protection on his first day in office."
Hello #econsky, the Nebraska Labor Summit will be held Friday, March 13, 2026. It's a really fun, junior-centric, research conference in labor and related applied micro fields. Martha Bailey and Alex Mas will give the keynotes. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 1! forms.gle/JC5tN5cT1R2i4ZUJA
I'm impressed, too! Just used it for a paper before our first submission, and most of the issues that the tool flagged were worth investigating. I think it's definitely worth $30 before each submission (and resubmission).
