The exemption was almost certainly illegal thanks to the uniformity clause. It was a nice policy, but as soon as someone sued it was dead.

Fluoride in drinking water has no effect on IQ or brain function, a long-term study shows.

The new research is the first to measure community water fluoridation exposure during childhood and any potential impact on cognition up to age 80.

The results contradict RFK Jr. statements.

it's wild that protestantism, a religious schism caused by people who lived every moment of their lives in mortal terror for their righteousness of their souls as weighed against the moral backbone of civilization, has achieved its final form as the perverted shibboleth of starvers and baby killers

From bike lanes to zoning codes, the needs of the few sometimes outweigh the common good | Shackamaxon Plus: Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr. says the quiet part out loud as he faces an election challenge.

It's common sense to allow Philadelphians to build generational wealth and age in place by adding bonus units (ADUs). This is one way we can prevent displacement and create affordable housing in one go.

Addendum. The mook took down his post attacking Netanyahu as an "unscrupulous Jew," replacing it with "unscrupulous Zionist." No acknowledgment or apology for zealous Jew-baiting. Just a sideways walkaway.

Caught being as cowardly as he was being overtly anti-Semitic.

We gotta bring back the productive kind of national shame. Not the throwing up your hands and going “what can you do, we suck” kind but the “I’ll be GODDAMNED if I let the fucking FRENCH have better TRAINS” kind

For a world in search of hopeful holiday messages, Trump’s profane social media rant stands out for all the wrong reasons | Editorial On Easter, three very different American leaders offered their distinctive outlook on a moment when the entire globe seems to be struggling to adhere to the spiritual instruction “Peace be with you.”

Three different American leaders, three very different Easter messages.

Yes, there are fewer barriers to the president ordering a nuclear strike than to a landowner who wants to build an apartment complex

Tweet from Susan Abulhawa: "Until Zionism, there has never been a singular, unified thing called “the Jewish people”
There were Jews all over the world: Egyptian Jews, Iraqi, Jews, Moroccan, Jews, Yemen, Jews, German Jews, French Jews, and so on. Each one of these groups of Jews had their own distinct indigenous heritage in their respective countries.
The overwhelming majority of current Israelis have zero relevance to Palestine. Literally zero. And they should go back to Europe or to hell. Their days are numbered in my homeland."

I don't at all agree with the post this person was responding to, claiming that indigeneity is a concept that applies to the relationship of Jews to Palestine. But the claim that the Jews had no concept of unified Jewish peoplehood before Zionism is so historically illiterate that it beggars belief.

The issue is more that you can’t raise money because the incumbent takes every donation against them as a direct insult.

How many people can go for a whole year without a salary? Not many. It is a very legitimate concern.

Yes, I want council to be a destination for people who are going places.

Exactly! Outside of becoming mayor, Philadelphia city councilmembers almost never go on to do anything else.

For good and for ill, resign-to-run keeps City Council ambition in check | Shackamaxon Plus: Councilmember Cindy Bass keeps Germantown down, and Gov. Josh Shapiro is hardly sweating his reelection challenge.

Resign to run is popular with residents, but it may be why City Council struggles to attract transformative thinkers.

Instead, we get members like Cindy Bass, who are more focused on who gets the job than whether it is well done.

Improving safety on Philadelphia’s roads is just as important as preventing violent crime in its streets | Editorial Despite the promise of successive administrations to eliminate traffic deaths, the toll remains stubbornly high.

On Sunday, Philadelphia had equal numbers of homicides and traffic deaths. While the city has seen killings decline by nearly 80% since pandemic-era highs, progress on traffic deaths has been much slower.

Sheriff’s office continues to fail Philadelphians | Editorial Under Sheriff Rochelle Bilal's leadership, the department consistently underperforms on its basic functions, including issuing deeds after property auctions.

The Sheriff has been an anachronism for 170 years. When will Philadelphia finally eliminate this office?

This is very silly, there's not a business model change that can account for an ancient building or land that needs environmental remediation.

The dc33 strike had more to do with the president having personal beef with her than anything else. She's been a firm ally of organized labor for decades. Any mayor will support development because it pays the bills without requiring a tax increase.

She is a lot more left leaning than you realize. She’s consistently chosen tax increases over service cuts throughout her career, and has personally fought for multiple unpopular taxes in Harrisburg. She’s just an incrementalist who avoids partisan rhetoric.

Kenney neglected OIT as well. We need to basically revamp that entire department plus the city’s HR.

Yes she does these things because it makes financial sense not because she loves riding a bike or taking trains. That might not excite advocates but it is a pretty consistent rubric that will benefit their side of the argument.
