If social media really is the destructive force many suspect it is, then what's the way forward and what changes are we all willing to make? If the solution is abstinence, then what will we replace it with?

I'm sorry I said you weren't very scary.

"I realized, the moment I fell into the fissure, that the Book would not be destroyed... It continued falling into that starry expanse, of which I had only a fleeting glimpse... Still, the questions about whose hands might one day hold my Myst Book are unsettling to me."

We're going in a very bad direction.
I think about this way more than I probably should.

Maybe there shouldn't be a website where everybody with anxiety goes to hang out
Screenshot of Joker and Batman from the Adam West Batman series surfing. Joker says "Cowabunga, Bat-Drip! As surfers go, it looks like you're all wet! Ahahaha!", to which Batman replies "Shut the fuck up! Fuck you!"
So many people seem to be walking around, constantly angry at a world that doesn't exist. Feels like a waste.
People say AI is rotting brains but also there’s a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram of people who reflexively hate all AI and also believe data centers are warming up the ambient environment by 16 degrees for miles around

some people are negatively polarizing themselves into intellectual property stances that would make Disney's lawyers blush
* Prioritize sleep and exercise, keep up with routine preventative care, if you drink, consider cutting back or stopping, go to therapy if you feel directionless or convicted.
Seriously, your 30s can be a fantastic time. It's been my best decade so far (early 40s).
Nah, the 30s are great. Take semi-decent care of yourself and your body won't betray you. FWIW, my advice is to invest in friends and hobbies outside of work, continue to explore and try new things, don't just assume you still want what younger you wanted, and start actively caring for your health*.
Over 40k people die a year due to cars in the US and that isn't even factoring in environmental damages. Instead of acknowledging the harm that cars cause to the populace cyclists continue to get demonized by people who can't even conceive of an infrastructure not centered around cars.
Again: Water is wet. We're not talking about a minor effect here, cars are two orders of magnitude more dangerous to pedestrians than cyclists.
A surge in cyclists has left some pedestrians feeling intimidated. "It's dangerous for pedestrians," says Bernadette, a 66-year-old university teacher. "Cyclists are always cutting in front of cars, running red lights and generally doing whatever they want.
Wild what you can get away with in articles about cycling. This is objectively false! A city with less driving and more biking is far safer for pedestrians. Hate cyclists all you want but that’s an empirical fact
Are there that many people who actually want Trump to reman in office for the next 3 years or are most of his remaining supporters trapped in an Abilene Paradox?
The USPS IS NOT LOSING MONEY. THE USPS IS SPENDING TAX DOLLARS ALLOCATED TO IT BY THE BUDGET. THE USPS SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO ZERO OUT ITS BALANCE SHEET IT IS NOT A BUSINESS IT DOES NOT HAVE SHAREHOLDERS. IF THE USPS IS OUTSPENDING ITS BUDGET IT SHOULD BE ALLOCATED MORE BUDGET.

Good post on using the tools you can get vs the "right" ones. I've definitely let an obsession fade too many times while shopping instead of just doing the thing with what I had. samhenri.gold/blog/2026031...

Fritos contain three ingredients: corn, corn oil, salt. People regularly disbelieve this because they think something unhealthy must have scary chemicals.
So the scientific definition of a category of food should include the intent of the people who decided how to make it? This isn't a helpful distinction, you're again just trying to back into a definition so that it can describe food you don't like.
This is the heart of the problem. "Ultra-processed" foods are considered unhealthy due to their chemical additives or their calorie density but neither of those have anything to do with "processing"!
This is just the word people use to talk about foods they don't like. Scientists should do better.
