Aled Damien Carbonell-Betancourt, a 27-year-old Cuban refugee who entered the United States lawfully in 2024, died in ICE captivity in Miami on Apr 12. He hadn't been convicted of a crime. His death is the 17th in ICE captivity this year alone. Many to most deaths in ICE captivity are preventable.

A San Francisco Chronicle investigation sent records from deaths in ICE captivity since 2025 to 14 independent physicians for review.

Alejandro Cabrera Clemente, 49, was "found unresponsive" in his cell at a Louisiana ICE internment camp on Saturday, April 11th, according to ICE. They claim they brought him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. ICE has provided no explanation as to the cause of his death.
For months, ICE has bypassed the procedural months-long bidding competition for government contracts by using a loophole intended for overseas military operations.
Now, their ability to fast-track internment camps is even greater because DHS paused all internal audits of these “no-bid” contracts.
Since Trump took office last January, over 6,200 children have been held captive inside internment camps where the food is inedible, the water isn’t potable and makes kids sick, medical emergencies go ignored, and contagious diseases like Covid-19, RSV, and the measles spread unchecked.

On Tuesday, Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez was shot by an ICE officer in Patterson, CA despite posing no threat to the officer.
