‘Science needs defending’: record number of researchers run for office in US mid-terms Many Democrats making the switch to politics are motivated by the Trump administration’s cuts to science — whereas energy and AI are a pull for some Republicans.

Apparently a record number of scientists are getting into politics, which is very good, but my questions are: How many of them are good at science communication, and how many of them are highly trained in the social implications of their fields? Because those are all different kinds of training.

…she was a self-described middle aged woman from the suburbs with no gay friends who walked into nyc’s ACT UP because she thought she could help. It’s correct that histories backgrounded her. But those of us who cared to look, we found her. Took note of her practices. And won’t let her be forgotten.

Dr. Iris Long died yesterday at the age of 91. It’s unlikely that you’ve heard of her. But she was the one who taught ACT UP members how to teach themselves the science. She created ACT UP’s drug tracking procedures, & she invisibly influenced much of today’s grassroots community health advocacy. +

Current work is as informed by my 2 decades of pre-PhD work as a designer, technologist, and artist as it is the PhD, but i likely wouldn’t have been let in the door, or had the legitimacy, at my current employer without the PhD.

Five questions for risk assessment
A risk assessment, or threat model, helps you identity your digital assets and create a plan to keep them safe. Knowing what you're facing is key to ensuring you have the appropriate safeguards in place. Risk assessments change depending on your context, which makes them a great place to start when working on a new story.
Start here
• Ask yourself these five questions (remix to suit your needs):
• Assets: What am I protecting?
• Adversaries: Who am I protecting my assets from?
• Adversary's assets: What might they be capable of?
• Likelihood: How big of a risk is this to me now, based on who I am in the world?
• Your resources: What can I do to protect myself?

the only opsec thoughts I will share on the timeline are: everyone’s needs vary because people face different risks. feel free to ignore anyone telling you there’s only one way, and take a little time to threat model your own situation. more here: freedom.press/digisec/blog...
