Slept 13 hours, lifted for 2 hours and about to demolish a massive chicken caesar salad and a mojito. All with the company of a great book. Staycation in full swing, folks

A very astute (and upsetting!) piece that touches on four scary cultural trends: 1) The demand for spelled-out moral clarity in stories 2) A growing inability to understand different types of narratives 3) The "customer's always right" version of fandom 4) The growth of fandom as a social identity.

I wonder what Senor Gimenez would think if he said he was going to obliterate Cuba.

a screenshot of a substack email section reading:

'Many people are listening to fewer podcasts than they were a year ago. However, How Long Gone, Nymphet Alumni, and Odd Lots remain on many download lists.

I’m not convinced a good podcast needs a video component – a lot of people aren’t watching.

Notable response: “I listen to three podcasts religiously and almost never add something new into my rotation unless something hyper specific sparks my interest. Always audio, mostly when I’m commuting/running errands. Never video, can’t be convinced to switch.”

Democrats keep doing better in elections since Trump returned to office With elections in Georgia and Wisconsin Tuesday, Democrats continued to overperform, which the party started in 2025 when it regularly improved on its margins compared to the presidential race in 2024.

Went on @NPR.org Morning Edition today and chatted with @steveinskeep.bsky.social about what “overperfomance” means and looks like for Democrats since losing big in 2024.

(Hint: the margins say a lot about what could come in November)

Camus’s The Stranger, It Turns Out, Is Still Relevant François Ozon’s lovely adaptation of the French masterpiece is both resolutely faithful and refreshingly new.

François Ozon’s new adaptation of Camus’s THE STRANGER, now playing in New York, is excellent. www.vulture.com/article/the-...

Yeah I think that's the key! If what you're describing is connected well with how the movie makes you FEEL, then it's a plus.

As a guy with a film degree, I've just always been wary of

I get that some critics are of the mind these days that more writers should be talking about the nitty gritty of filmmaking more. I can see the point. But in an era where accessibility is a problem, I think sticking with the broad strokes and explaining the deeper stuff when it actually makes a diff

Yeah and honestly i find that to be the sort of thing most audiences will also roll their eyes at or entirely skip over. You can touch on themes, performance, cinematography, scoring etc. without getting so niche that you just look like you're bragging.

I think this is all part of the same influencers =\= journalists tbqh. I lump this in with the cringe tiktok twink variety hired for the red carpet at the Oscars.

Podcasters, short form video clippers and online personalities aren't made for this!

Genuinely love how he has a film journal and all of those stubs saved. Those moments are cool because they seem genuine. Though I admit I have rolled my eyes a few times, Kevin does ask smart questions!

God thank you for saying this. I never want to be unnecessarily harsh but I just find the whole thing so cringe and emotionally manipulative. Also you just never learn a damn thing about the movies or artists. Its so bizarre

The writers I know love to write. They write because they want to write.

I know other people who are just looking for bylines and money via writing, and there’s another word for them, but it’s not “writer.” It’s also not surprising when they jump at a workaround.

Had a nightmare that I went to see a supposed Fallout movie at the theater and everyone was on their phones and wouldn't stop talking. Then my husband got mad at me when I told them to shut up.

So I left & tried calling an Uber home but my phone was hacked and all I could do was watch crypto ads

Personally I do find her astro turfed origin story, her overall disdain for fans and her utter lack of a sense of public political responsibility to be super annoying.

And it is precisely because I find astro turfing detestable that I also oppose this kind of bot pile on. Just sick.
