The University of Miami football coach has used the word “violent” twice already in interviews, one before the game started and one after the first quarter. The most recent usage he literally said his team needs to “be more violent.”

This language is very problematic.

A thing I think we miss is that the “authoritarian playbook” isn’t a set of instructions authoritarians are reading from, it’s just a list of things that happen when narcissists get too much power.

A “self-coup” is when a leader who gained power through legal means overturns the rule of law to seize dictatorial power. It’s what Ferdinand Marcos did in the Philippines. It’s what Bolsonaro tried to do in Brazil. It’s what Trump is doing now in the U.S.
