🧵 Yellow Magic Orchestra & ringtones: a thread.
YMO is a Japanese synthpop band (Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yukihiro Takahashi), known for their groundbreaking electronic music. Let's explore their connection to ringtones...

YMO is one of my favorite electronic bands, so I hope this was insightful! They have influenced lots of musicians especially game composers - and certainly many ringtone/tech product composers as well.
Not quite YMO, but speaking of Matsutake, his music company Music Airport created ringtones for companies like Sony Ericsson, Yamaha, Sanyo, Nokia, etc. It is not clear if he personally composed some himself or if they were all outsourced.
An example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP8x...

With the release of the UC YMO compilation in 2003, official ringtones of tracks were distributed on the Record Kaisha Chokuei♪ site. These were created by Hideki Matsutake, who did a lot of programming work on their actual songs.
They're pretty good.

In 2009, YMO (as HASYMO) created the song "Good Morning, Good Night" for the NTT DoCoMo NEC N-04A commercial. The phone itself has 14 original ringtones by HASYMO.
Sadly the ringtones have not been archived and shared online yet, but the song is available: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzuw...

The most well known connection is that in 2005, Sakamoto composed all the ringtones for the Nokia 8800. They are tranquil, blending acoustic and electronic instrumentation.
I uploaded a full collection of them in 2023: www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9in...

I brought this to light years ago and uploaded it!
It's bizarre. midi_14 is a knockoff of the Ice Climbers title theme as well. This is the only Motorola phone to include these midi_xx ringtones; I assume they came from Compal, the Taiwanese ODM that manufactured it.
Certain models of the 2003 Motorola MPx200 clamshell phone contained a ringtone that was blatantly just the "Fever" theme from Dr. Mario with different notes.

I believe there's also many that are currently lost but I'm happy many were preserved.

Been talking with Tobias lately, he's helped to confirm many of the tones he did for Sony Ericsson, ranging from silly novelty ones like this to unusual electronic stuff: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Despite Jens only having three confirmed credits (these above), I was able to get a good understanding of his style thanks to correspondence with one of Vitamin's founders. His ringtones have an often dreamy, liminal feel to them:
