It seems like every part of water rights was created by people going “oh shit, I didn’t think of that. Okay, here’s what we’ll do for now but we should come up with something more solid in the future.” And then just stacking generations of those fixes on top of each other.

The eastern US cares less if someone downstream calls dibs on the water, which means that it can lead to its own kind of hijinks with people buying land upstream and screwing with people downstream. But the dibs thing is crazy too.

To be clear, I’m not claiming that the system of the eastern US would actually be any better in any major way. I don’t know one way or another and even coming up with an opinion on that seems like a lot of work for not a lot of reward. All I know is that it’s weird out here.

Unfortunately former New Spain happens to also be the chunk of the country where water is the sparsest and fights over it are the gnarliest

We constantly get articles that are like “This farm that produces decorative sunflowers is pumping so much groundwater that a nearby town is sinking into the earth. How is this legal? Well, when Spanish Crown created the rancho system for the Catholic Church…”

Only half the US water rights work that way, if you want to figure out which way it works where you are, you just need to check if the land rights that are passed from owner to owner were created by a decree from the King of England or from the King of Spain. This is not a joke.

I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

I also love that in interviews about that performance since, she made it clear that she didn’t do it like that in rehearsals, she was saving it for the show

Remember When Stevie Nicks Burned a Hole Through Lindsey Buckingham With Her Gaze During This 1997 “Silver Springs” Performance 27 years ago, Stevie Nicks gave us the best performance of "Silver Springs," where she stared a hole through Lindsey Buckingham.

This one, for anyone who hasn’t seen it before

You probably know exactly the video I mean, but the 90s reunion concert when Stevie Nicks drags the microphone over to Lindsey Buckingham and stares him down while she sings the breakup lyrics from 20 years earlier is the most Fleetwood Mac thing they’ve ever done

The Pharisees existed outside of the New Testament though, and as a group of Jews that early Christianity was essentially feuding with and trying to attract people away from, it’s no surprise that they’re not portrayed super well in Christian texts from that time.

NYC was the test pancake and all the other modern cities learned what not to do from them. In particular they learned that blocks full of tall buildings need some kind of alley or driveway so trucks can drive around back.
