I’d imagine ‘scan your receipt’ barriers aren’t to stop shoplifters, they’re to ensure that everybody picks up their receipt after paying.

So that subsequent checks on the way out by a security guard aren’t stymied by a “I didn’t pick up the receipt” line.

It is true, though, that doing this will probably succeed in creating an AI that is equal in productivity and intellect to a Google engineer who works 60 hours per week.
