VILLAIN | Kirkus Reviews Paradigms shift in the wake of a supposedly indestructible superhero’s defeat in this sequel to Hench (2020).

Villain is coming out in *less than a month*, so please prepare for me to be completely insufferable in the short and medium term.

This book was more difficult to write than I could ever have imagined, and this Kirkus starred review was such a relief and a joy: www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews...

Sorry to be overly sincere for a second, but here's why we decided to persevere through all of the bullshit and take over InfoWars.

There's just gotta be a line somewhere.

Thank you @pablo.show for letting me talk so openly about this.

Two male slate-coloured juncos face each other in mid-flight, clasping feet like dancers as light snowflakes flutter around them in the snowy forest.

Two male slate coloured juncos hover facing each other in mid flight. The one on the left pulls his wings into an upstroke while bracing his tail, staring into the eyes on the one of the right who is mid-downstroke. Snow flutters around them in the snowy forest.

Some mid-air junco battles from the other day. They do these amazing, spiraling aerial battles. It's taken some practice to be quick enough to catch them. Most of my shots are of empty sky :) #birds 🌿

Excerpt follows:

"Similar to the above, highborn women routinely learn to play musical instruments and sing, but there are certain instruments and forms of song that are considered “too seductive,” and thus also only the provenance of sex work. Sex workers who learn these instruments and forms of singing are colloquially referred to as types of birds. (SEX AND SEX WORK)

Sparrows are typically considered low members of society and work in brothels and markets that can be accessed by any member of society as long as they have enough money, though their rates vary considerably on a wide array of factors. They are also often associated with crime, particularly theft, poisonings, and blackmail.

Nightingales are akin to courtesans, and like courtesans are usually received as members of higher ranking society, somewhere below highborn nobility and above most tradeborn people. During certain reigns they’ve even been members of the high court. They’re considered glamorous, well-educated, and are very expensive to hire, and only available to highborn or very wealthy tradeborn clients.

Starlings are self-made sex workers who imitate the trappings of nightingales, but are widely considered as lacking the same pedigree. The term is used somewhat pejoratively, on the assumption that self-made sex workers who style themselves after nightingales lack the training and talent to perform the same level of musical skills, even if they are very beautiful. Additionally, they make themselves available to all clients, like sparrows, which adds to their déclassé stigma."

Even though yesterday's post is for paid members of my Patreon, I can't help sharing one of my favorite entries from the list of sumptuary laws in Highmarch, the primary setting in the world of HOTBLOOD (medieval history enthusiasts, can you spot specific influences)

The Four Tempers

All aspects of this world were created in the image of the four true gods. Thus are we made in their image. In blood, bone, and marrow, as the Four balance the world, so too is the presence of the gods balanced within us as the four Tempers: Blood, Bile, Char, and Silt. When we live in virtue, in the body as well as spirit, our Tempers are kept in balance; and so too do our sins threaten that sacred trust between body and soul, man and the world, humanity and the true gods. Should our Tempers run amok, we risk tearing the veil between our world and the Miasma asunder. Should the veil be torn such that no weaver can put it right again, then woe: for no matter our weeping and rending of mortal flesh, no matter how the gods may pity us, on that fateful day the Shadow and all Nine Pits of Hell shall devour this world whole.

– From a novice’s catechism of the Crowned Covenant, copied at Montreval Abbey during the reign of Tristan the Torchbearer.

It's always fun to write diegetic introductions to aspects of a game's world. (The humoral theory-based stats system in HOTBLOOD is an offshoot of another in-dev project, THE LONGEST REST. Working on HB has been really helpful in getting through some blocks in TLR!)

I don't think that people are mean enough to ICE cops, actually. Some of you have them as family members. What are you doing to shame them?

There was literally a pangolin that flew combat sorties with the CIA in a dirty war in Laos that then died after drinking too much gin, so there’s at least one pangolin whose record is morally ambiguous

"Known throughout the realm as the scion of a great house, you live as though the world itself is your inheritance. But others see you as little more than a spoiled cultivar – the terminal point in a line of greater men.

What would you do to prove them all wrong?"
