And new markets ALWAYS seem incommensurable until they aren’t

Predator prey relationships will never be the same once all this research on non-human communication gets enough processing power. These tools don’t have to understand us in order to manipulate us

I wish I was joking

Short run: language models lead to understanding non-human languages exist.

Long run: Ocean gets full of chat bots and advertising for whales to start selling them squid meat on doord*sh and am*zon with submarine delivery bots

My experiences with them and the requirements for how you articulate projects change the way that I can get project management and probably influence more about how the future Build Soil org will be than any other experience I had

So I’ve been learning about how medieval art they got around the second Commandment by viewing copies as the only legitimate way to represent Jesus and we’re much more interested in “acheiropoieta” art made without hands

I ended up pausing on a grant with them because I realized I wanted to improve my chops as an academic which is why I’m doing my PhD but they were the kindest most helpful and most professional agency I have ever had the pleasure of working with

I applied for a few grants with them and I was incredibly impressed with how they conceive of and articulate their work

My dream job would be like a Diana Earth Mission repairing groves and springs. And arguably that’s what we’re trying to make with build soil’s next step

This is not a criticism I think Artemis is incredibly cool I’m just aware that we defended a huge part of NASA’s mission and it deserves enthusiasm because they are that good. The skill set that NASA requires in order to do their space work they also require their earth work

Now image what we could do if we refunded the Earth side of NASA again.

Every time I hear somebody talk about the Artemis project I like oh wow are we building sacred groves again?

And then it just turns out it’s not about tree planting and springs 😤 🌳

I will also point out that both Kant and Galton were obsessed with the Arctic as a “pure” space of whiteness and reason and work key to their philosophical understandings of the legitimacy of European closure and colonial supremacy & why I really don’t enjoy when people embrace the “sublime”

I have to come back to it when I can read/see better, but this is an excellent thread

Build Soil will be reaching out and doing interviews and having discussions on the processes needed to build a world that works for all, even as all surity is falling apart.

That's what we were built for.

in the meantime, learn about Transfer Compost Toilets:

and a LOT of this information is in the heads of people currently sitting in nursing homes or who are struggling with end-of-life because they devoted themselves to world saving rather then personal wealth- we need to talk to the boomers

we have to work for the energy supply of the total society otherwise we build the beginnings of zero sum games and desparate spreading vulnerability

If you externalize dirty water, energy demand, environmental destabilization elsewhere you might not see the effects immediately but trust me you don't what OTHER states or communities failing because that will come back to bite you.

and another important note: if you have at your desposble a high-energy but high-externalization tool (like gpt) it might seem like you are personally escaping the consequences.

But during a society crises of limits, the well being of others IS your concern.

Expect this EVEN if the moving the country to a total war machine temporarily secures any of these- there may be subsidizations that are meant to stop you from panicing or prepare you for other changes - build the AT foundation regardless of it you personally are experiencing the shocks

Expect electricty, materials, clothing, transportation, medicine, heating, food, water to be costly, spotty, and unavailable.

We have to drop low fast, we have to feed each other, we have to immediately draw from the tools of the 1970s and 80s and getting that information is important.
There is a minimum toolkit and it will be good to know it and it's particulars for your ecoregion.

i'm going to have to leave cafe so i'll pick this back up but i'll temporary do an tldr for what is coming:

- we have to build energetic & material foundations to get anything done
- AT, lessons from the great depression, Indigenous tools and solutions from the global south are the set of options
