What the 'Science of Reading' Movement Has Meant for English Learners (Opinion): We should think of reading instruction for multilingual learners as a bridge, not a checklist.

TIRED: the screens and the social media are poisoning kids and making them cynics.

WIRED: we're showing kids the absolute worst moral and political examples and they're learning awful lessons from that.

But I *also* think that sociologists and political scientists should be watching carefully at how kids growing in that environment act as adults. They've had such terrible models for leadership—and citizenship.

I figure that supporting and protecting kids through the 2016–2026 (and counting) era has taken years off my life.

And so I say to the world again: the lunacy and chaos of the past decade has made parenting for democracy, for America, for decency just immensely difficult. Destabilizing democracy, political violence, an awful pandemic, ongoing public health failures, etc...

And I did my whole thing, that now-familiar dance of trying to tell him the truth, enough of the truth that I wasn't lying to him but not so much of the truth that he'd panic...all while insisting to him that This Isn't Normal, This Shouldn't Be Happening.

Last night, around 7PM, after hours of putting it off, I pulled my oldest kid over to talk about what the US' threats might mean for Iran, for those of us living here in the US capital, for the country, for the world.
