An unimportant side note: What is it with this plural "straits" that I've been seeing and hearing from a few people? (I heard Rep. McGovern say this a few nights ago.) There is only the Strait of Hormuz. So weird.

I think you have it backwards. It's not that CNN doesn't get religion. It's that they don't get secularism, that the United States of America is a secular country, which means CNN should be telling its viewers that elected officials should basically STFU when it comes to religion.
