#PressFreedom in Canada is neither absolute, nor guaranteed.
The Carney government is thinking of weakening the public's access to information. If anything, access must be *improved*.

SCOOP: An investigation by The Narwhal and Point Source shows LNG Canada burned 350 million cubic metres of gas in 2025, making it one of the worst polluters for flaring emissions globally and undermining Canada’s environmental claims. @writermjs.bsky.social #lng thenarwhal.ca/lng-canada-b...
Are you concerned about tap water safety?
"The Narwhal spoke to 12 people, including lawyers, members of three source protection committees and several conservation authority staff, many of whom spoke anonymously (...) these experts worry about the loss of local input, knowledge and protections."
Thank you for responding! Truck exhaust is relevant for sure, but I think in that case it was a specific event and I'm looking for impacts from our overall use, or extreme weather. I hear you though, I was there and I remember the fumes (and horns) inside the hallways of the building I lived in.
Source callout! I want to talk to people about health and climate-driven extreme weather. Have you dealt with things like asthma triggered by wildfire smoke or air pollution? Have you had heat exhaustion or evacuation-related mental health distress? Please reach out at carl@thenarwhal.ca. Thank you!
Journalism job alert: The Narwhal’s Ontario bureau is excited to announce a new position for a reporting fellow to cover Queen’s Park and the ways policy affects people in racialized communities. Learn more and apply:
Great story from my rockstar colleague @jsrutgers.bsky.social that points out the history of pipelines pursued in times of war. "Now, a new oil crisis is renewing old interests."
Hey GTA! @thenarwhal.ca is hiring a BIPOC reporting fellow to help us explain how Ontario government policy affects people's actual, everyday lives. More info here, drop questions in the chat if you have them. thenarwhal.ca/ontario-repo...
How time flies! 😀
“If they really, really cared about [the assessment], they would work with the federal government,” Ontario NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa, who represents the region, told The Narwhal. “By not providing any information or any data to the process, they are essentially muzzling the process itself.”
As an Ontario ad talks about "developing the Ring of Fire," the regional assessment has already highlighted how environmental monitoring in the region that overlaps Indigenous homeland needs to be enacted now, and health care funding gaps need to be addressed urgently thenarwhal.ca/ring-of-fire...
Ontario Environment Minister Todd McCarthy said he'll look into the province’s lack of involvement. He also called it "an exception" and said Ontario "will be part of the conversation." But the assessment has been in the works for 7 years and Ontario's participation was previously marked as "TBD."
There are several areas where Ontario holds valuable info that a regional assessment of the North needs. But the province hasn't been at the table, raising questions about whether it's blocking public servants from participating. From @fatimabsyed.bsky.social and I: thenarwhal.ca/ontario-fede...
The war with Iran is making oil prices fluctuate wildly. What does this all mean for Alberta, a province whose budget sinks or swims on the price of a barrel? What does it mean for Canada as a whole?
Could this fresh chaos cause countries to re-evaluate their dependence on oil?
A massive LNG project proposed in Quebec is quietly advancing. A Norwegian company wants to build one of Canada’s largest LNG export terminals in Baie-Comeau. Documents show Ottawa has assembled a federal “deal team” to help, @sarahkcox.bsky.social reports: thenarwhal.ca/lng-export-p...

I asked the secretary-general of European Union diplomats if Europe wants Canada's oil and gas. She said Europe will give priority to clean energy sources and expects to continue to rely on renewables and nuclear power: thenarwhal.ca/eu-canada-oi...
Saskatchewan Crown Investments Corporation Minister Jeremy Harrison has said the province will “not comply” with the clean electricity rules. The Saskatchewan legislature passed the Saskatchewan First Act in 2023, which claims the province has “autonomy” over electricity generation and emissions
In January, a Saskatchewan court dismissed a citizen-led legal challenge against the coal-power extension plan. Peter Prebble, a board member of one of the applicants, Saskatchewan Environmental Society, told me they're going to be encouraging the minister to tell the province "you can’t do this."
Federal coal phase-out rules and Canada's clean electricity rules are both under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which regulates toxic substances. CO2, NO2, SO2, mercury from coal plants are all on the toxic substances list. Dabrusin can intervene when a party is about to violate the law
Environment minister will work with Saskatchewan to “ensure” it follows the law, her office reiterated, as the province pushes to keep its coal plants open past Canada’s deadline. Dabrusin’s office was mum when asked if she would intervene thenarwhal.ca/saskatchewan...
Meanwhile the assessment group has itself faced difficulty moving forward, it said, due to emergency conditions faced by several communities in the Ring of Fire. First Nations have faced wildfire evacuations, some lack clean drinking water, housing, health care. "The bulk of the work lies ahead."
The report says environmental monitoring "must be community-driven and started immediately, and before any development occurs." Mushkegowuk director Lawrence Martin believes the First Nations involved are taking the issue seriously. “We have to trust that our own people are very concerned" he said
Construction is set to begin on what will eventually be three new access roads to the Ring of Fire. They were proposed by two remote First Nations that want secure all-season access to Ontario highways, driving down their cost of living. Mushkegowuk communities want to see the all-season roads too
A federal document released in January, part of a regional assessment of the consequences of industrial activity in the Ring of Fire, says too little is known about past and present environmental conditions there. Premier Ford has said the province is on track to get “shovels in the ground" in June
Mushkegowuk Council is hoping new recommendations to “immediately” enact environmental monitoring in the Ring of Fire and help communities “urgently” access health care will see the light of day — even if construction on access roads is planned to begin in four months: thenarwhal.ca/ring-of-fire...
