On Monday, Virginia’s Governor, Abigail Spanberger, signed into law a bill that eliminates tax exemptions for organizations connected to the Confederacy. Most people were not aware that these organizations were exempt from paying taxes, or that they were even still around.

The bill, passed by the House and Senate in the General Assembly, specifically removes the Virginia division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy,

...the Stonewall Jackson Memorial, the Virginia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, along with other groups, from the state’s list of organizations that are exempt from state property taxes.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), founded in 1894, is largely responsible for the proliferation of Confederate statues and monuments across the country after the Civil War.

According to tax filings published by ProPublica, the group raised more than $2.1m in revenue, had more than $1.1m in expenses, and possessed $15.8m in assets in 2025. The group was founded in Nashville, but its headquarters is in Richmond, Virginia, the former capital of the Confederacy.

According to the Institute for Southern Studies, the UDC "elevated the Ku Klux Klan to a nearly mythical status. It dealt with and preserved Klan artifacts and symbology. It even served as a sort of public relations agency for the terrorist group.

Until 2011, the organization restricted membership to whites. The group venerated the Ku Klux Klan during the Jim Crow era, and in 1926, a local chapter funded the construction of a monument to the Klan. Why should they be tax exempt?

Last week, Spanberger signed into law a different bill that discontinues speciality license plates that feature Robert E Lee and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

She also sent a bill that would establish a task force at the Virginia Military Institute to, among other things, recommend ways for the college to distance itself from sanitized narratives about the Confederacy.

Donald Trump has called for the reinstatement of Confederate monuments and said that he would “not even consider” renaming military bases that were named for Confederate leaders. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reverted army bases back to their Confederate names.

Conservatives have been attacking Spanberger over the past few weeks over issues like not allowing ICE to use state law enforcement to round up immigrants, signing gun safety laws, and supporting the referendum on redistricting. They are adding this measure, as if she should defend the Confederacy.

But Virginia has changed. It will always be a southern state, but it doesn't have to be the capital for racism. It's not even a red state anymore, as it was when I first arrived in 1998. Now, it is purple.

National Republicans are focused on Spanberger and will spend the next four years gaslighting about her. Part of that will be because she is female. But with moves like taking away the tax-exempt status from racist organizations, she's doing the right thing, polls be damned.

The original plans for this monument were for it to be 76 feet tall to symbolize the year of America’s founding, which, in case you were educated in a red state, was in 1776.

Soon after, Trump insisted that it be taller than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, which stands 164 feet tall. Eventually, Trump decided that the arch should rise to 250 feet, to celebrate America’s 250 years, making it the tallest triumphal arch in any of the world’s capital cities.

Trump got the idea to build an arch, either from a run to McDonald’s or on a visit to Paris during his first term, when he was invited by Macron to attend a commemoration of Armistice Day, which ended World War I. He also got the idea for a military parade on his birthday. Thanks a lot, Macron.

And just like that military parade celebrated Trump more than the military, this arch is not a monument to our nation’s founding, but to Donald Trump. If this were to celebrate the nation, it wouldn't be so gaudy, tacky, and ugly.

On Wednesday, White House spokesgoon Karoline Leavitt said the arch would celebrate “the enduring triumph of the American spirit.” Last year, when Trump was asked by a reporter who the monument was for, he pointed to himself and answered, “Me.”

This business of building monuments to himself and having shit named after him is some very Saddam Hussein-like shit. By the way, there is an arch in Baghdad that was built from a sketch made by Saddam Hussein. There's also one in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Leavitt said, “Great nations build beautiful structures that cultivate national pride and love of country, and this triumphal arc should be a project that all Americans of all political persuasions can support.” So why are we building this ugly piece of shit?

Just like the hideous ballroom that Donald Trump destroyed the East wing for, this thing grew in size and became even more hideous after he added his personal touches to it, which, of course, are golden eagles and lions. Have you seen a photo of the Oval Office lately?
