Today, let’s celebrate Rachel Ignotofsky for #womenshistorymonth. Her best selling book “Women in Science” celebrates women who have made a difference, but my personal fav is her “What’s Inside…?” Science series. Beautiful books introducing science vocabulary through digestible definitions? #loveit

Let’s celebrate Vashti Harrison for #womenshistorymonth. Her books center Black voices through transcendent “girl-experiences” that anyone can empathize with. Her newest book, BIG, tells the story of a little girl who is too big and loud for feminine spaces yet learns to love herself. Love it!

Today, let’s celebrate Sue Hendrickson for #womenshistorymonth . If you type her name into Google, Hendrickson is an “American Explorer & Paleontologist;” she found the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil - “Sue” the T-Rex now found in Chicago’s Natural History Museum. #staycurious #suethetrex

“The illustrations in picture books are the first paintings most children see, and because of that, they are incredibly important. What we see and share at that age stays with us for life.”

Today, let’s celebrate Emily Calandrelli, The Space Gal, and host of Emily’s Wonder Lab on Netflix (which she filmed pregnant!). Not only has she inspired my children’s love of science, but she is an authentic female voice who I believe is making history. Happy #WomensHistoryMonth! #pb #kidlit

At the age of 116, Mary Walker had seen slavery, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement. And yet, it wasn’t until she was over 100 that she learned to read. Learn more in Rita Lorraine Hubbard’s book “The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read.” #womenshistorymonth #kidlit #pb

My favorite Mary Anning #PB is “Dragon Bones: The Fantastic Fossil Discoveries of Mary Anning” by Sarah G. Marsh. Anning, of “she sells seashells” fame, was a fossil collector who influenced modern understanding of prehistoric life. #WomensHistoryMonth #kidlit

Todays #WomensHistoryMonth #PB is “The World is Not a Rectangle: A Portrait of Architect Zaha Hadid” by Jeanette Winters. Found at Eastern Davenport Library, it chronicles the Iraqi born architect's style, specifically how nature shapes her designs. See screenshot for examples. #kidlit

As an ELA teacher this comment may seem sacrilegious, but I believe we need to go back to teaching basic language fluency and soft skills. We need more discussions that include higher order thinking whilst requiring less writing. I think this would help students who struggle with processing, too.
