Now you can break up with big tech at a bar: ‘cybersecurity disguised as a party’ These digital security organizers bring the fight for online privacy to dance parties, bars and reading groups

“While the reach and sophistication of these surveillance apparatuses escalate, so too are authoritarian movements,” EFF’s Daly Barnett told @theguardian.com. "I think people are recognizing those two trends and trying to figure out what to do about it.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/202...

Three panel comic. Panel 1: scene from the movie Aliens; Ripley is in a mech suit and delivers her iconic line: “get away from her, you bitch!” Panel 2: the xenomorph queen lunges at Ripley in the robotic suit and they engage in a fight. Panel 3: later, the xenomorph queen is standing in the shower, mid wash. She says, “‘it takes one to know one, honey.’ That’s what I should have said.”

The oil industry is making billions from the Iran war—it should be taxed - CCPA The current windfall could be Canadian oil's final boom—so the proceeds must be reinvested into economic diversification and industrial planning

Last week, @policyalternatives.ca put together an urgent call for Canada to tax the profits that the oil and gas industry is making off the war in Iran. Yesterday, the best Carney could do was removing tax on average people, further defunding the state.

RUN - HIDE - DEFEND There's a violent incident occurring on campus. Avoid the campus. If you're on campus:

• Stop all activities and get inside a building immediately. • Find an enclosed area and lock or barricade the door. • Turn off the lights and mute all electronic devices. • Stay away from doors and windows. • Take cover and remain silent until authorities instruct otherwise. If a violent attacker is close by, be ready to run, hide or, if your life is in imminent danger, defend yourself by any means necessary until you can get away. Remember: RUN - HIDE - DEFEND

If we want to win elections, we're going to need to be a big tent party. The Guy Who Wants To Stab You has to be in the tent. If you can't form a coalition with The Guy Who Wants To Stab You, you're probably not serious about winning. And if we don't win, somebody is probably going to stab you.

The obvious answer here is that the student protest movement was broadly smeared as anti-semitic and aligned with terrorists, and a variety of institutions from government, media and the universities acted as if that smear was true, threatening, suspending, expelling and even deporting students.

Mark Carney, Doug Ford to cut development charges by up to 50 per cent to boost housing construction Mark Carney, Doug Ford to cut development charges by up to 50 per cent to boost housing construction

“The federal and provincial governments are simply giving tax breaks to the private development industry and telling them, ‘do what you do.’ No conditions. No targets. No metrics,” said @ricardotranjan.bsky.social, Ontario research director at @policyalternatives.ca. www.thestar.com/real-estate/...

In recent days, AMA communications to the New York Times have requested a correction on their part to reflect the actual language the AMA used in response to their inquiry. Additionally, a letter to the editor has been submitted requesting a public correction—this was neither a policy change nor was it an endorsement of a position taken by another medical society. In addition, during Congressional testimony in mid-March, I had the opportunity to set the record straight stating to the Subcommittee on Health of the House Energy and Commerce Committee that there has been no change in AMA policy with respect to access to and provision of gender-affirming care. This will appear in the Congressional Record.

The American Medical Association directly responds to New York Times coverage mischaracterizing their posiiton on gender affirming care for trans young people.

The RCMP’s "Native extremism program" is a jaw-dropping betrayal. Wiretaps & secret dossiers were used to target leaders fighting for their rights—not security threats.

I’m calling on the Public Safety Minister to release all files & hold public hearings. Accountability now. ⬇️

Rogan and Poilievre are talking shit about people who impose their will on others. Poilievre specifically emphasizes trusting people to build their own lives.

Frankly rich, given conservatives across Canada are controlling the lives of trans kids and intervening between them and doctors.

What can we learn from a close loss? Kat Abughazaleh didn't win the IL-09 primary. But a 4-point loss may still tell us something important about the direction of the Democratic Party.

Pundits who appear to spend all day on social media are declaring that being ‘Very Online’ doesn’t work in politics. The irony. Meanwhile this 26-yo candidate w no experience nearly won a 15-candidate race… New post on what we can actually learn from IL09

see?
here's the thing. A lot of people are like, the earth is fucked, it's beyond salvation, it's hit the tipping point, but time and time again we see that if we just fucking fixed the problem, it rebounds so incredibly fast. Imagine what could be done if people actually cared

Opinion: A minority government is best suited to manage Canada in a crisis The legitimacy of Parliament itself suffers under majority governments

Again I find myself in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with Andrew Coyne. Governments will always want a majority. But that doesn’t mean that’s what’s best for the country, especially now. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...
