its being framed as a limitation of translation itself and not as a decision

we actually have very good translations that preserve the art's original meaning, one very good example I can think of is undertale japanese translation

3 weeks ago 4 0 1 0

such a weird post
even weirder to see fans defending that he is right

that translation "can go wrong" and that the art can lose its meaning so he should not do it
as if translators didn't have a millennia old field with established processes for that

3 weeks ago 5 0 1 0

I like discussing stuff! translation is a field that I appreciate very much, although I mostly consume media in english these days

I'm glad it didn't sound rude, I just wanted to share what I know about translation

it's a dying underappreciated field that people don't know much about

you are correct, it does get negative reactions
but I think they/them also gets negative reactions?
bigots are bigots everywhere in the world, that shouldn't be the reason to stop us from having things

you don't hire someone to build you a house back sitting if they are doing calculations correctly or something
you specify the result that you want and work with them to achieve it
they'll inform you if they need your help or if there's some compromise to be made and that's it
it's a service

3 weeks ago 0 0 1 0

for me, it feels like saying that "it can go wrong" and "it usually goes wrong" is just diminishing the entire translation field

when you hire a translator, you aren't necessarily meant to understand the translation, it's for those who speak the language

I'm non-binary and it is very common for non-binary people here in brazil to choose one of the neutral popular neopronoun for them

3 weeks ago 1 0 2 0

hey, I do happen to speak one of these languages and queer community just created a neopronoun and that's it
translations to brazilian portuguese just use that

for example, temtem!

I'm not arguing with Toby, I'm arguing that it can be done and it is as easy as paying someone to do it
if he doesn't want to it's fine

translating without losing its meaning is a known process, there are a lot of different types of translations
a very popular example would be undertale in japanese

3 weeks ago 3 0 2 0

I read the post too! :)

thanks for informing me, though

I think he is very attached to his art and that's it, which is ok

but localizing art without losing its meaning is a known process, we have been doing it for literally millennia
he's just not willing to do it

3 weeks ago 0 0 1 0

you don't see good fan translations that easily because it takes a lot of effort and experience
and there's qualified people with experience willing to do the effort if they are paid
it is very simple

3 weeks ago 0 0 1 0

the difficulty of the translation itself is irrelevant, though
professionals are hired to do a job that you paid for, the easy part is hiring
of course a very specialized service is hard, that's why people dedicate their lives to the craft and people pay for it
otherwise anyone would do it

Translations of Ulysses - Wikipedia

it is actually not

Ulysses and other very difficult literature were translated successfully by professionals, I'm sure Undertale would be way easier
books have been around since forever, I think we know how to deal with heavy text translation

not saying any of this to discourage, the idea is awesome and it looks great

just sharing my thoughts as it seems like a difficult project and it got me curious

seems very challenging to keep scaling incrementally the bullet hell too
and I feel it can get tiring (like physically)

when I play incremental games there's short sessions based on idle progression and longer sessions until a nice goal
10 minutes is fine for bullet hell, but not sure about 1 hour

1 month ago 2 0 2 0

looks great! this is my first time seeing your game, so I have a question

I always associate incremental games with idle (not necessarily offline progression), is it not present in your game? can't see how that would work with bullet hell

1 month ago 1 0 2 0

I think they didn't make it because the goal was to eventually extend moderation for self labeling too, as that would maintain it decentralized

you could setup your pronoun here and then use it for others atproto implementations

don't think that's a priority though
