A long, skinny map titled: "Life and Travels of the European Eel" with a subtitle reading: "From the Eel's Perspective." A label at the bottom of the map reads: "Begin Here." The map top half of the map is an mirror copy of the bottom half.

I will put the full text of the column in the alt text in an image in the next post in the thread.

The map goes from the bottom of the page up, starting in the Sargasso Sea. An set of arrows show the eels paths to shore, then up a river and into a marshland. The arrows continue up the page to show the eel leaving the marshland and heading back downstream, and out to sea. The land is green and verdant at the bottom of the map, because the eels migrate upstream in the spring. The land is brown and dry at the top of the map, because eels migrate downstream in the autumn.

A column of text on the side tells about the eels' journeys and changes. It is more text than I can relate in the space allowed here. Each paragraph has an arrow pointing up to the next one, and they are designed to be read from the bottom of the page going upwards.

Several years ago, on a whim, I started drawing a map of an eel's life travels as seen by the eel.

I figured an eel thinks about its life as a linear journey, rather than a there-and-back again adventure. So I wanted to do a map to reflect this.

This morning, on another whim, I finished the map!

RouteWeather — Ride the forecast

Silti valtio rahoittaa kaivoshankkeita sadoilla miljoonilla.

Vielä yksi epäkohta: vaikka kaivokset tuottavat yli 76 prosenttia kaikesta jätteestä Suomessa ja yli 90 prosenttia vaarallisesta jätteestä, kaivosten ei tarvitse maksaa jäteveroa, mitä muut maksavat 80 euroa tonnilta. Olemmekin esittäneet Suomeen kaivosjäteveroa. 7/7

Riding on ice with 30mm tyres and a singlespeed was pretty tough, but also very much fun! There's been fantastic conditions lately.

We are seeing multiple instances of reviewers doing manuscript reviews via use of AI/LLM.

If you don't want to do a review the old-fashioned way, better to decline the request.

Giving someone else's manuscript to AI is a violation of intellectual property rights/laws; the manuscript isn't yours...

In a world dominated by AI & disinformation, I expect we will see a major pendulum swing culturally. People will crave authenticity and reality over deep fakes and conspiracist lies

I'm here for it, sharing #RealArchaeology

Comic. [Banner: Mathematical Society: 2025 Meeting.] PERSON 1 with bun: Any other new developments from the year to cover before we wrap? PERSON 2: Oh, the teens picked a new funny number. PERSON 3 with short hair: Aww, I’m glad to hear they’re still doing that. PERSON 4 with ponytail: I’ll add it to the list. [List: 23 (skidoo!; 42; 69; 420; 1,337; 58,008; [circled]: 67]

Oil is the most Lovecraftian thing that actually exists. You're telling me that there's a black ichor under the earth, made from the ancient dead, whose burning can realize all the dreams of man but only at the price of slowly returning the earth to its primordial state?

Imagine choosing to model scenarios that implicitly assume a) terraforming-scale carbon capture and permanent sequestration is technically, politically and economically feasible, while e.g. b) shifting from car-dependent sprawl to denser cities with good public and active transit is impossible.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

Thick black line is the centerline of the Beni River in Bolivia. Circles that are tangent to the centerline represent the radius of curvature ag the location. Smaller circles = higher curvatures.

In this version the circles are colored according to the curvature; brighter colors = higher curvatures.

I have been experimenting with different ways of visualizing the curvature of meandering rivers. Plotting curvature in the context of the meanders themselves helps QC-ing the curvature data ⚒️🧪

This is a danger i'm willing to ignore. 😜 I do indeed plan the route(s) in advance and follow the navigator. Unless something super interesting pops up nearby.

Please also share your rides for us to enjoy!

Thanks, and I totally agree! This time the route was also a real sightseeing trip. I should design the routes around great sights more often.

The final 60km home was pretty tough. No wonder: 4,5km ascent and ~120km gravel roads over a total of 370km. I didn't quite break the 400km threshold I was aiming for, but considering everything I'm more than satisfied. There's always the next time! 😎😅

To finish this thread off: I had the next break at 312km visiting my friend's summer cabin. The whole trip started to grow on me and the final kms were pretty slow. But it was worth it.

The nights shift is done and what an adventure it was! Abandoned mines, creepy forests, moose, elk, bats, fox, Finland's most beautiful tree and forbidden places (🤡) to name a few things. 219/4xxkm.
