Alongside longer research articles, we're specifically interested in hearing from DJs, folks in nightlife, journalists and independent writers to contribute shorter, blog-style pieces from the field -- the more experimental and media rich the better. Please share widely.

Writing opportunity: The DJ Set. Special issue of the journal Dancecult
This call aims to move forward how we understand DJ sets as the musical and social centre of gravity of most electronic dance music scenes.
Deadline 1 June: dj.dancecult.net/index.php/da...
So! My buddy Derek and I have launched a music school! It's called Tuniversity and it was motivated by two different things: people want to study with us who don't attend NYU, and NYU does not have enough classes for us to teach. Our first songwriting class starts next month. tuniversityny.com

In our new article out now in the Journal of Popular Music Studies, me and @delaceymusic.bsky.social examine how grime and dubstep DJs complicate the received notion that live electronic dance music must involve seamlessly sequenced tracks. From the outset, dub-diasporic DJing has rupture built-in.

What makes an ideal DJ set? While continuity is key for a techno set, an artist influenced by dub or hip-hop may instead relish in rupture: the MC might demand they rewind the track when a bass line is so strong it simply has to be heard again from the top.
Bravo Ireland. This is such a great boost for artists. I have an Artists tax exemption in Ireland for works under 50k. It helped me so much - existence in a feast or famine career is hard. But consecutive Irish governments realized that writers, musicians, artists are the lifeblood of the country.

exciting, can't wait for this to come out.
We're slowly building an alternative to Spotify and Bandcamp. Owned by artists, labels the people who work here. Why? Because if we work together and own it together it can never be taken away.

Went to an event with about 40 people, had good fun playing and chatting but the crowd quickly thinned out when the store couldn't get carde.io working and we had to just play casuals at the table

Someone recently contacted me about accessing the archive of the Low End Theories conference we ran online in 2023, inspired by my PhD research. The site has been cleaned up and archived cfp + recordings of the talks are now fully online. sites.google.com/view/lowendt...
