STEWART: “Comedy doesn’t change the world, but it’s a bellwether— we’re the banana peel in the coal mine… authoritarians are the threat to comedy, music, art, thought… progress.”
Nailed it.

John Martyn's "experimental brand of singer-songwriter music" pushed English folk beyond its traditional boundaries, integrating jazz improvisation and avant-garde sounds. His work influenced a new generation of musicians, showing that acoustic instruments could be used to create expansive, electronic-influenced soundscapes. The combination of Martyn's percussive, fingerstyle playing, often in open tunings, with the Echoplex's analog tape delay created a textural quality unlike anything else at the time. The tape machine's unique characteristics—warmth, slight signal degradation, and feedback—were central to his tone. Martyn's groundbreaking use of delay had a lasting impact on subsequent artists. Most notably, U2's The Edge has cited Martyn as an inspiration, and the rhythmic, atmospheric style of guitar playing he developed has become a hallmark of modern and alternative rock. Other (better) guitarists were inspired by him too.
'Inside Out' (1973) was probably Martyn's most experimental album, featuring a deeper exploration of jazz influences. The record includes notable contributions from musicians like Steve Winwood and Traffic bandmate Chris Wood. Standout tracks include the hypnotic "Outside In" and the fan-favorite "Fine Lines."
'Bless The Weather' (1971) was Martyn's return to solo recording after two albums with his then-wife, Beverley. The album's sound is predominantly acoustic and marked a creative turning point for Martyn, showcasing his development as a jazz-folk musician. It was recorded in just three days, according to Martyn, who said the process was "very innocent, very beautiful and a pleasure to make." It's also a pleasure to listen to!
'Solid Air' (1973): A cult classic and probably his masterpiece, inspired by Martyn's close friend, Nick Drake, who would die from an overdose eighteen months after its release. The song "May You Never" became one of Martyn's most famous tracks, later covered by Eric Clapton. The album is known for Martyn's innovative use of the Echoplex tape delay effect, particularly on his cover of Skip James's "I'd Rather Be the Devil."
Remembering British singer-songwriter John Martyn, born Iain David McGeachy on September 11, 1948, in New Malden, Surrey, England (d. January 29, 2009). Fave albums: 'Bless The Weather' (1971), and 'Solid Air' and 'Inside Out' (both 1973), plus various live recordings I've heard. More: alt text
