My father passed away peacefully on Saturday. He was kind, funny and brilliant. I will miss him very much.

Committee members Dan Walzer and Tim Hsu with the new doctor at his defense back in December.
We have a new doctor in the house. Signed documents and everything. Congratulations to Dr. Jerelle Austin. I’ve had the privilege of working with Jerelle and watching him grow into an outstanding leader, teacher, and scholar. The Herron School of Art and Design celebrates this milestone.
Lately I've had to remember that not everything happens according to our timelines. Usually in the spring we get many "I'm delighted to announce" posts. Jobs, concerts, grants, gigs, fellowships, and so on. It can be discouraging. Please keep plugging. We see you. It'll come. Be kind to yourself.
Journal article accepted. Nice way to start spring break.
New Publication Alert!
I'm pleased to share a new article, Post-Digital Aesthetics
Nurturing Technology-Mediated Songwriting in Music Education, in Sustain: Journal of Sustainability and Futures in Music Education, based in Germany. journals.ub.uni-paderborn.de/sustain/arti...
I’ve grown a bit leery of seeing the word democratize used to describe every aspect of teaching and learning. I certainly use it and appreciate its significance, but it feels like a buzzword at times.
Hard to read the news these days. I’m trying my best to channel my energy into positive things and be the light wherever I can. It’s been a tough go recently.
When people sign emails with Best, I always wonder if it’s two out of three.
Manuscript submitted. Now for the long wait.
Sometimes I look at a project for months and just feel completely stuck. Lots of data, little ability to parse through it and see the big picture. Then, one day, it just becomes clear. Then the writing commences. Lots of imposter syndrome during that writer's block though.
I’m slowly pursuing graduate courses in learning science and development through IU Bloomington’s School of Education. I’ve decided to dive deeper into a concentration in qualitative inquiry. I’m looking forward to expanding my understanding in educational psychology.
Article on learning science and music technology pedagogy accepted. Excited to share it in the near future.
The Obamas.
I miss them.
I have decided I’m rooting for Bad Bunny in the Super Bowl.
Of course, we must do more than just donate. It's a crazy and harrowing time. Do what you can, where you can, in your local community.
Lots of ways to help Minnesotans. Please write/call your Congressional leaders and explore this list of resources. Many are for mutual aid organizations. organizetherich.substack.com/p/how-to-sup...
My heart is very heavy this evening.
None of this is normal. And it’s okay to acknowledge that. It’s also ok to feel a range of different emotions. I don’t have answers but want to hold space for the collective feeling of messiness and anger so many of us feel.
Beginning my 19th year of college teaching.
We received word that our accelerated BS/MS in Music Technology has been approved. Students will be able to complete both degrees in five years. We’re very excited and look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks.
Just feeling heavy today. Don’t have any answers. Solidarity with others who may be feeling similarly.
There’s a special kind of grief many of us are feeling tonight. Because it didn’t have to be like this.
Horrified and disgusted by what happened in Minneapolis today. We’ve lost the plot.
Received a nice review of a track from my recent album Hoosier Songs. Nice way to wake up. www.anrfactory.com/daniel-walze...
I've got four papers out for review dating back to early 2025. The waiting really is the hardest part.
This volume is now available for preorder. Fun to work on a chapter combining post digitalism and music technology with doctoral students. www.amazon.com/Critical-Lis...
Looking back, lots of things to be grateful for in 2025. Also very challenging in some ways. In the end, hopefully more light than darkness. Thanks for tagging along on life’s journey with me.
Vegan roast beef slices on a cutting board.
Made vegan roast beef for dinner. Turned out great. Quiet day reading and hanging with the wife. Bigger celebrations in the coming days. Hope it was a good one however you celebrated.
Just want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas. I appreciate all of you.
