Happy Easter! Please enjoy this video my sister sent me of a family of bears on the slope yesterday at Sugarbush resort.
Among the atrocities and contradictions, SBE is the NSF directorate that funds the brain and mind research relevant to NSF’s new AI-focused priorities. Make it make sense appears to be expecting too much (sigh).

Our newest paper is out where we investigate how exogenous RNA triggers innate immune responses, such as PKR activation and stress granule assembly. rnajournal.cshlp.org/content/earl...

Feeling real shade for my Japanese multipen collection (0.3mm coletos to the grave). Always looking for new recommendations!
Running an academic research lab is hard.
I’ve learned that what matters most isn’t perfection, but clear expectations, consistent communication & shared responsibility.
My lab certainly isn’t flawless, but here are some thoughts on organizing a lab. go.unc.edu/SStManagement
To be clear, @aaas.org is saying “things are not bad at all” in science on the same day this op-ed was published by former NIH-ers is on the nose.
Just a complete disconnection from reality on AAAS’ part. I hope members will hold them accountable.

I got postdoc money from the Sacklers. So no sticks or stones from me, but science is rightfully getting a new wave of incoming re:Epstein. A good time for some much needed self-assessment about "where is the line?"
Easy win: Avoid donors your staff calls Voldemort.

3/5 To identify the biological 'control knobs' of immune tissue, we utilized CD40L-induced B cell aggregates as a model system. We demonstrated that these structures function as liquid droplets, terming them B-Lymphocyte Organized Multicellular Blobs (BLOMBs). youtu.be/QAk2ayoVF0M
Having recently found that increasing the default font size on my phone was a dramatic quality of life improvement, placing an open call for recommendations like this for people who might be in denial of their aging husks. (Chatgpt didn't miss a beat).
KOSMOS, this week's buzzy AI scientist, posits that a coding mutation in a well-studied diabetes-related protein is functioning instead by mutated/cryptic exonic TFBS. Plausible, and totally fine to hypothesize; and word salad for an AI preprint is fine too. But horizon farther away than I thought.
Quite possibly the best thing you'll read all month.

Random grant writing tip.
I generally use 'drawing canvas' to insert figures. This keeps the legends and everything together. But there is one problem, text boxes inside the drawing canvas cannot cross the edge and text boxes are always bigger than the text.
In our latest vaccine immunology study we tested whether it is possible to simultaneously prime multiple classes of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) against HIV using a combination of germline-targeting (GT) immunogens. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
