I saw their mother give them a phone immediately. She then zoned out on her own phone. We arrived at a transfer station, and we took different routes. I saw them again at the next train platform, and the mother and child were still on their phones… | Afterthought: As I continued to ink this comic, everyone on the train was on their phone. Said child appeared to be no older than two years old.

This is the layout overview.
Transcription:
Time is passing so quickly. I received an invite to Gander Social’s Expanded Beta program on February 19th. It is a new social media based in Canada founded on bringing decency back to the social platform in the Spirit of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It has been a privilege to be a beta tester and early adapter.

The new app has not been without raging trolls, but the administration has been quick to ban them.

I brought many ideas to the platform. When I was rehearsing on guitar, it occurred to me that it would be great to have the ability to do Instagram-style livestreams. People were quite receptive to this idea.

I look forward to seeing what else Gander has to offer!

During the beta discussions, I also suggested the platform offer a LiveJournal style blog service. The current modern Iteration is DreamWidth. The original LiveJournal service was sold to a Russian based firm in 2007.

Gander discussions are still ongoing from bugs to feature requests. What makes Gander special is that it doesn’t use an algorithm, allowing users to view posts in chronological order, without getting spammed with ads.

Post image This is a closeup of the top of the first page. It features a couple hugging at the beach, with a Canadian goose and maple leaf I painted in the foreground. Next to it is a hand painted Gander logo. The background is layered with German language text, and watercolour books and a spider in its web in the background. It’s surrounded by maple leaf punch outs. The sardine can is partially visible on the bottom.

I wrote a love letter to #Gander in my #TravelersNotebook.

I used a variety of materials to put together this nostalgic layout. Details in the comments.

This is the cover of a new Traveler’s Notebook insert. I used part of a flyer, and assorted stickers to decorate. Some of it is Psn Am branding from the 10 year anniversary collection, featuring a sticker and washi tape. I also feature a Braniff International luggage tag sticker. I also used a banner sticker from the Traveler’s Town collection.

This is a multimedia two page spread, predominately featuring nostalgic gouache renderings of the orange soda I bought. I attached the label from a sushi sandwich, which included tempura with shrimp & vegetables. I used an assortment of colourful daily life stickers with torn edges to give a scrappy look.

I wrote about my memories of McNally Robinson in Winnipeg, surrounding it with stickers from a Maruzen/Junkudo collaboration. Next to it is a memo sticker of a panda and a red panda, where I wrote about the annual cosplay summit in Nagoya, and my own memories of cosplay from my youth.

This is another multimedia page where used paper, daily life stickers, and acryla gouache to put it together. The layout is mostly shades of pink and brown. The acryla gouache painting is a rendering of an old package of pink toilet paper from a recent post on the r/nostalgia subreddit. I wrote about how I still sometimes see pink toilet paper in Japan, and how these posts serve as little reminders of daily things that I still experience that are mostly from a bygone era in many western countries.

RETRO City Nights IN WINNIPEG, MANITOBA.

SUMMER MEMORIES

COULD I REALLY GET OUT AT NIGHT AS A ‘90S KID?
THE SHORT ANSWER: NO

As a child of the 1990s, I missed out on the experience as an adult. I was still very much tethered to my local community.

BUT… I still have memories of buying snacks at Seven Eleven. A popular drink among us kids was “swamp water”. Slurpees are a frozen ice drink. Swamp Water is a mix of multiple flavours, often overfilling the cups.

AND…
TRIPS TO THR LOCAL VIDEO STORE.
I rented a lot of avant guarde movies like Mars Attacks, and Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

The page is rendered in pink and blue marker, and a black pen. It is drawn in a retro ‘zine style with blocky and cursive titles, and simple doodles of the Seven Eleven logo, an old Slurpee cup, a VHS tape, and a map of Manitoba.

Transcript:

FLASH FORWARD TO EDMONTON, ALBERTA, 1999 2000s

A New City
IN A NEW PROVINCE

I still wasn’t old enough initially to take in the night life.

BUT…
WEST EDMONTON MALL

Rendered next is a collage of places that used to have a presence in and around West Edmonton Mall. To the left is a highway sign, featuring Cosmo, the alien character that served as the mall’s mascot.
Transcript below:
Cosmo used to be the mascot of the mall.

Clockwise from 11:00: The Planet Hollywood logo, a simple text rendering of Playdium, the Circuit Circus Entertainment logo, and the Red’s Rec Room logo.

Transcript to the right:
These are just some of the old venues at West Ed. I went to Red’s and Circuit Circus most.

Transcript below:
So much has changed at West Ed during the 2010s, and most of the venues listed above were gone by then.

This page is also rendered in blue and pink marker, and black pen.
